Wakefield Sunoco's Health Kick Is Good for Customers and Business

The store manager at the Wakefield Sunoco says customers may not mention the new healthy products at the gas station market but when he sees them coming up, one after another, buying the new healthy products, he can tell that they're on to something.

Recently, the Wakefield Sunoco became an official Mass in Motion Healthy Market, part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Healthy Market Program. The program was designed to make it easier for convenience store owners to bring in healthy food for customers.

"I think it's good for business; it's good for the neighborhood and customers want healthy food," said Wakefield Sunoco store manager Mike Musleh. "There is a demand for this."

Musleh began working with Mass in Motion representative Kara Showers roughly two months ago and recently became an official Healthy Market.

Showers said there's a back and forth between the program and the store owners/managers to find the best "health plan" for each business.

"It’s figuring out what works with the customers at these particular stores," said Showers.

Musleh said he's been adding a whole range of new products, from fresh fruits and vegetables, to yogurts and healthy drinks. He said specifically, many people are going for the apples, oranges, bananas and yogurt.

In addition the Sunoco, the Wakefield 711 is also an official Healthy Market.
