About Dorothea
Moving to Wakefield seven months ago was the best thing that has happened to me in recent years. What a gorgeous town overlooking the amazing Lake Quannapowitt! My love for writing has truly blossomed in this fertile soil.
I grew up in North Central Worcester County in a rural town northeast of Worcester. Weather has intrigued me from a young age when our family home was heavily damaged by the 1953 Tornado. The next year we were also hit with Hurricane Carol. Later, as an adult, the Blizzard of 1978 dropped two and a half feet of snow and 10-foot drifts on our suburban complex in Middlesex County.
I wrote my first play and my first song before I was 10 years old. I was co-editor of my eighth grade yearbook, enjoyed creative writing throughout high school and was often published in the school newsletter for which I was a copy editor. Although journalism was not my college major, I took courses to increase my knowledge in writing styles and techniques.
As an adult, along with being an at-home mom for my two children, I continued to enjoy writing and soon found my niche as a newspaper correspondent. Covering everything from police logs to election results, from local feature stories to meeting reports, deadlines came early when I was trying to get the kids out the door to school as well.
When my husband died of a massive cancer invasion, the typewriter keys fell silent while I struggled to bring our chldren up alone. Later, in the corporate world of computers, I began to excel in the computer hardware market of Digital Equipment Corporation, receiving excellence awards for my work in marketing and world-wide events.
Once the kids were grown, the writng bug began to take hold again, first as a hobby and more recently as a contributor to local newspapers. Coming from an actively involved background for many years in North Central Worcester County, it has not taken long to become involved here.
I love my church, teaching chronic disease self-management techniques, reporting weather information to the National Weather Service and attending area town events along with submitting stories for publication. I enjoy the companionship of my beautiful, blue-eyed Ragdoll cat and daytrips to see the ocean, as well as sometimes traveling to Southern Maine to visit my favorite lighthouse, Nubble Light.
