Regional Middlesex Jail Moving Forward Despite Governor's Veto

Police chiefs in all cities and towns in Middlesex County, including Wakefield, wrote in favor of the $1.5 million in state funding for the regional facility, which Gov. Deval Patrick vetoed.

Editor's note: This article was updated on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The Sentinel and Enterprise reports that Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian will still pursue the creation of a regional lockup facility for cities and towns within the county, despite Gov. Deval Patrick vetoing $1.5 million in state funding for the facility's construction.  Koutoujian requested that his office carry over the $1.5 million remaining in supplemental funding it received last year into the new fiscal year, the Sentinel and Enterprise reported. That funding was included in a $40 million supplemental budget bill, but vetoed by Patrick before he signed the bill. REPORTS: Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff Died from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Prior to Crash

The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. Wednesday on Treble Cove Road in Billerica.

The Middlesex County deputy sheriff who was found dead after an early-morning, single-car crash in Billerica Wednesday died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, according to the Lowell Sun. How and why Dillon shot himself remains unclear. A spokesperson for the Middlesex Sheriff's office said the situation is still under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the department would not comment on the cause of death at this time.  "At this point we’re not commenting on any reports or reporting beyond what we’ve offically put out in our statement," the spokesperson said.  The Middlesex County District Attorney’s office has only said that his death was not suspicious and no charges are being filed.  The Middlesex County …

Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff Killed in Single-Car Crash

The single-car crash happened Wednesday at 4 a.m. on Treble Cove Road in Billerica.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating a single-car crash involving a Middlesex County Sheriff's Department vehicle, killing the driver, a Middlesex County Corrections officer. The single-car crash happened Wednesday at 4 a.m. on Treble Cove Road in Billerica. The Middlesex County Sheriff's office identified the deputy as Edward "Teddy" Dillon III, 27, of Lowell.
