The MBTA is looking far and wide for a company to run its commuter rail service.
Before the MBTA shells out billions on a new long-term, commuter-rail-service contract, it’s first spending nearly $3 million on an international search to attract the best applicants, according to the Boston Herald. The MBTA is looking for a company to run its commuter-rail-service operations over the next five to possibly 30 years, as its current, roughly $250 million-per-year contract with the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. (MBCR) expires June 2013. MBCR plans to bid aggressively for the new deal, according to the Huffington Post. In Wakefield, commuter rail fares to Boston will rise from $4.75 to $6 as of July 1st.
After all of the talk, public hearings, and protests over the past three months, the MBTA Board voted Wednesday afternoon to boost fares 23 percent and cut back service in an attempt to close a projected $161 million deficit in the next fiscal year. Board members approved a plan in a 4-1 vote that would raise most subway fares by 30 cents, bus fares by 25 cents, and commuter rail fares by at least $1.25. Meanwhile, some cuts in service -- mainly involving bus routes, The Ride, and the commuter rail -- were also approved. In Wakefield, no bus lines will be cut, but a one-way commuter rail ticket from Wakefield to Boston will increase from $4.75 to $6. Many people showed up at today's hearing and were given a chance to talk during an hour-…

Irene is gone, but transportation agencies are still feeling the storm’s aftereffects. Here’s a rundown of transportation services in and around Greater Boston: Monday’s flight schedule at Logan Airport is riddled with cancelations as airlines redistribute planes across the country. “They’ve got to get the planes in here to get people out,” said Logan Director of Media Relations Phil Orlandella. On a typical day, Logan carries 550 departures and 550 arrivals, said Orlandella. As of 11:30 a.m. Monday, there were 210 canceled outbound flights and 141 canceled inbound flights. Orlandella said passengers should expect more delays Tuesday. “You have people whose flights were knocked out Sunday, people who were canceled today, and people who are…
