Presentation Will Help Parents, Kids Talk About Safety

Parents of children aged 1 to 9 can register for June 10th presentation via the Beebe Library website.

The Wakefield Rotary has announced a “Just for Adults” presentation on keeping kids safe, on Monday, June 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Beebe Library on Main Street. The presentation is geared toward helping the parents of children aged 1 to 9 talk to them about avoiding sexual abuse and keeping safe. The Wakefield Rotary will also provide a light supper, and on-site child care will be sponsored by the Burbank YMCA. RSVPs are accepted on a first-come, first-reserved basis. WWII Veteran Recalls Battles for Guam, Iwo Jima

Lawrence Kirby was a Marine who participated in the battles for Guam, Bougainville, and Iwo Jima, writing the book "Stories from the Pacific" in 2004.

World War II veteran Lawrence Kirby shared his recollections of the World War in the South Pacific Tuesday afternoon as a special guest of the Wakefield Rotary Club. Kirby published a memoir of his experiences in 2004 entitled "Stories from the Pacific." He joined the Marines at age 18 and served as an advance scout in some of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific campaign - Guam, Bougainville and Iwo Jima. In these video clips, Kirby talks some more about his experiences during this crucial time in the nation's history.

Wakefield Rotary Helps Supply Dominican School

Local club members providing $5,000 for equipment at new school in impoverished region of the Dominican Republic.

The Wakefield Rotary Club announced this week that it had provided $5,000 for new equipment at a school in an impoverished region of the Dominican Republic. According to the announcement, La Escuela Cajuil is a new school in the Dominican town of Macao. Local Rotary members worked with Dominican counterparts from the Rotary Club of Punta Cana-Bavaro to provide the supplies. Specifically, the funds from Wakefield reportedly helped purchase: 50 children's desks, a teacher's desk and chair, a water cooler, filing cabinets, cleaning and janitorial supplies, and 50 basic learning books and literacy supports. PHOTOS: Wakefield Rotary Takes The Polar Plunge

Wakefield Rotary members helped raise thousands of dollars last weekend to fight polio around the world.

Members of the Wakefield Rotary joined several hundred other people in Gloucester last weekend for the 2013 Polar Plunge. The event raised about $70,000 to help fight polio around the world. Thanks to David Watts, Jr. for sending in these photos. Watts reported that the Wakefield Rotary led other chapters in fundraising with $5,432 - an amount sufficient to pay for more than 9,000 polio immunizations. "Since the effort began, all but three countries have seen the end of new polio cases. The latest country is India. The three remaining countries are Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria," said Watts in an email to Wakefield Patch, noting that a program about this will be airing soon on Wakefield Cable Access TV's public channel.

Local Rotary Members Will Do The Polar Plunge To Fight Polio

Rotary members from Wakefield will participate in the 3rd annual Polar Plunge Feb. 9th at Long Beach in Gloucester.

 The following was provided by Rotary District 7930: Rotary District 7930 will hold its 3rd annual Polar Plunge on Saturday February 9, 2013 at Long Beach in Gloucester at 11:30 A.M.  The event is part Rotary International’s ongoing campaign to eradicate polio in our lifetime. The event is expected to yield more then 250 people plunging into the cold waters off Cap Ann adjacent the Cape Ann Motor Inn.  The Gloucester Rotary Club is the host for this event.  Last year close to 160 people braved the icy waters in an effort that is considered on of fellowship, public awareness, and fundraising. Last year’s efforts yielded more then $34,000. Polar Plunge and Polio Chairman Bob Gravino of the Ipswich club has set this year’s goal at $100,000.  …

Rotary Offers Grant For Overseas Graduate Study

Wakefield Rotary now accepting applications for grant to do graduate-level study overseas.

The following is an announcement from the Rotary Club of Wakefield: The Rotary Club of Wakefield is now accepting applications for a competitive academic grant. Applicants will compete for a $30k scholarship grant to study during the 2013-14 semesters. The award winner will study and live abroad while gaining a graduate-level degree from a foreign learning intuition. Applicants must be studying in one of the following Six Areas of Focus: 1) water and sanitation 2) peace and conflict prevention/resolution 3) disease prevention and treatment 4) maternal and child health 5) basic education and literacy 6) economic and community development. Nominate A Science Educator For Rotary Project

Nominate a science educator to serve on a vocational training team going to the Philippines for three weeks this spring to work with local teachers.

The following is an announcement from the Rotary Club of Wakefield: The Rotary Club of Wakefield is now accepting nominations for members of the Rotary Vocational Training Team. Members of the team must be science educators working in grades 1-6 or providing professional development to educators at this level. The team will participate in a professional exchange to the Philippines for three weeks from March 16-April 8, 2013. The team will be helping elementary teachers in the Philippines improve the teaching of science and learn new science techniques. The team members will also visit Rotary clubs, attend the District Conference and see the sights in the Philippines. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Rotary …

Wakefield Rotary Marks Veterans Day With D-Day Veteran

Morley Piper was 19 years old when he landed on the beach on D-Day.

The following was provided by the Wakefield Rotary Club: The Wakefield Rotary Club celebrated Veterans’ Day early with a joint meeting with the Reading Rotary Club this past Tuesday. The club welcomed World War II veteran Morley S. Piper. A Second Lieutenant in the Army, Piper recounted his first-hand experiences of the Normandy invasion. He was among the first to land on Omaha Beach during the infamous WWII conflict as a 19 year-old officer.Piper only recently began speaking about his experiences. “It was so fitting for our clubs to hear Mr. Piper on election day,” noted Reading Rotary Club President Brian Crosby. “We owe all of our veterans a thank you for allowing us to continue to exercise our freedoms, including our right to vote,” …

D-Day Vet/Former Journalist To Speak At Rotary Meeting

The following information was provided by the Wakefield Rotary Club: On Tuesday at noon at Peter Sanborn Place, 50 Bay State Road, Reading, the Wakefield and Reading Rotary Clubs will hear from a veteran of the pivotal D-Day campaign in World War II who went on to be a longtime area journalist. Morley L. Piper  was a new second lieutenant with the US 29th Infantry Division in the D-Day landings in Normandy June 6, 1944, one of the epic military engagements of all time, a battle that changed the course of World War Two.  He was with the division throughout the war, ending on the Elbe River in Germany, except for six weeks recovering from wounds in the Normandy campaign.
