Residents Warned About Vehicle Break-Ins and Lottery Scams

Wakefield Police see a recent upswing in lottery scams and vehicle break-ins, advise residents to pay attention.

  Wakefield Police are warning local residents to be wary of two specific crimes that have been generating some reports in the area. Lieutenant Craig Calabrese of the Wakefield Police Department reports that some lottery scams have been reported in the area, where people receive a letter claiming they have won a sum of money – with a portion of the “winnings” supposedly included in a check in the envelope. People are then instructed to call a specific phone number for additional information. Calabrese also noted that several vehicle break-ins have been reported in town in recent weeks. Local Police Sent to Boston After Terrorist Bombing

Law enforcement personnel from both Wakefield and Lynnfield joined colleagues in Boston soon after Monday's incident at Marathon finish line.

Law enforcement personnel throughout the region have been assisting their colleagues in Boston since Monday’s terrorist attack. In Wakefield, Lieutenant Craig Calabrese told Patch.com in an email that the department has four staff members who were sent to Boston after the Monday afternoon bombing. The four are among the department’s representatives on the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, which provides public safety support throughout the region. Lieutenant Steven Skory reportedly worked with the incident mangement unit in Boston, Officer David Rando was with the motorcycle unit, Detective Ken Silva was with the bicycle unit, and Officer Kristopher Malm assisted with the communications unit. Store Window Smashed, Cigarettes and Scratch Tickets Stolen

Thief struck Main Street Variety just before 11 p.m. on Sunday evening.

A thief smashed a window Sunday night at the Main Street Variety in Wakefield, making off with cigarettes and scratch tickets, according to Wakefield Police. The department's log for Sunday indicates that a caller at 10:59 p.m. reported a white mail in dark clothing who was possibly bald got out of his car and went to the door. The caller then reported hearing glass breaking. From there the culprit reportedly drove off in his vehicle, described as a dark 4-door Toyota or Mazda with a sun roof and a loud muffler. Upon arrival, police confirmed that a break-in had occurred, and they put out a BOLO alert for the vehicle, which was not located. The owner of the store reportedly arrived on the scene soon after. Police Dept. Grant to Fund Crisis Intervention Team

Grant provides further training for officers in dealing with individuals with mental health issues.

On February 6th, the Department of Mental Health (DMH) hosted a legislative breakfast at the State House for over 50 northeast area communities. The breakfast was an opportunity to highlight the partnerships between DMH, mental health providers, persons served, northeast communities and legislators. DMH asked Riverside Community Care, Eliot Community Human Services and the Wakefield Police Department to present a poster at the event entitled: “Creating Community Connections: a Model for Collaboration between Mental Health Providers and Police Collaboration.” This model has led to a stakeholder group of mental health providers, the police department, and community leaders that meets regularly in Wakefield. Police Warn Residents About Driver's License Website

Resident brought website to attention of police, who point out that the only valid site for renewing driver's licenses is the official state one.

Wakefield Police are advising local residents to be wary of a particular website that purports to offer driver’s license renewal and other services. According to Lieutenant Craig Calabrese of the Wakefield Police, one town resident recently brought the MassachusettsDriversLicense.org website to the attention of the department.  That particular website “is not a valid site for renewing a drivers license or registration,” said Calabrese in an email, adding that the proper website for state drivers license renewals and other such services is the official state one at this address. Calabrese also noted that the driver’s license website in question also apparently charges a fee and asks for personal information.

Local Mom: I Tried To Check Sex Offender's Background, Found Nothing

John Burbine of Wakefield, facing numerous child sex charges, was a Level 1 sex offender. A Wakefield mom reports she checked out Waterfall Education Center two years ago and found nothing.

A Wakefield mom whose son was tutored by an illegal day care business where more than a dozen children may have been sexually abused says she checked out the proprietors' background — and found no red flags. On Thursday afternoon, news spread quickly through the region about the indictment of a Wakefield couple for numerous charges stemming from an illegal day care operation where graphic child sexual abuse occurred and was even recorded. @Simon. You are on the right track, more resources need to be diverted to protecting children. The problem is law enforcement focused on ex sex offenders already consumes millions of dollars with no impact at all. There's no impact because of the low recidivism rates amongst the general population of offenders. The rate of child abuse has seen no effects of the Sex Offender Registry because 95% …   more ›

Wakefield Resident, PD, Recognized By AAA

Robert Rapucci and the Wakefield Police Department were recently presented with AAA's Gold Star for their work to support public safety.

The following was provided by the Wakefield Police Department: The Wakefield Police Department was recently recognized by AAA for outstanding achievements in traffic safety and were presented with the Gold Star, which is the second highest award given by AAA. The Department was selected for their continued safety programs such as child safety seat installation, seatbelt enforcement, and efforts to combat impaired driving. Also recognized by AAA was Wakefield resident Robert Rapucci, who was presented with the “Traffic Safety Hero” award for 2012. Wakefield Toys For Tots Program Getting Underway

Unwrapped toy donations to be accepted in collection box at Wakefield Public Safety Building until mid-December.

The following is an announcement from the Wakefield Police Department: The Toys for Tots program helps less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; and allows everyone to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children. Detective Kenneth Silva, Officers Jonathan Burnham and John Whaley, all U.S. Marine Corps veterans, will assist in picking up these toys and storing them in central warehouses where the toys are sorted by age and gender. At Christmas, these toys are distributed to the less fortunate children of the community. Over the years, Marines have established close working relationships with social welfare agencies, churches and other local …

Wakefield Police Offering VIN Etching Saturday To Deter Car Thefts

VIN etching makes autos less desirable to thieves. Wakefield Police holding VIN Etching Day Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DPW Garage on 35 North Ave.

The following is an announcement from the Wakefield Police: The Wakefield Police Department and the Governor’s Auto Theft Strike (a unit of the Massachusetts State Police) are sponsoring a “VIN Etching Day” to mark automobiles and make them unwanted by car thieves. The event will be held on Saturday, November 17 from 9am-2pm at the DPW Garage located at 35 North Avenue. VIN etching entails chemically marking the car with its own unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on all windows, including sunroofs and T-tops. The chemical process of etching involves using acid that reacts only to glass. Etching the VIN on all the glass windows of the car makes vehicles less wanted by car thieves. The fee for etching is $10 (CASH ONLY) and most car …
