Professionals Still Needed For WHS Job Shadowing Day

At least 90 Wakefield High School students are participating in Job Shadow Day next month. Professionals from various industries are still needed to get involved.

On March 21stWakefield Memorial High School is sponsoring its 7th annual Job Shadow Day to support the junior class in exploring career interest areas.  So far, 90 students are signed-up to participate. Local students teamed up with staff at The Savings Bank for annual Mystic Valley Elder Services cookie drive.

Student officers of the 1st Educational Savings Branch of The Savings Bank at Wakefield High School joined fellow students, staff members at The Savings Bank and WHS faculty and staff in baking and collecting cookies for the 9th annual Mystic Valley Elder Services “cookie drive.” Thousands of cookies were distributed to local elders who received the MVES holiday gift baskets this year. Wakefield Graduation Rate Well Above State Average

Rate of 2011 graduating seniors comparable to or above most area communities.

Wakefield ranks far above the statewide average when it comes to high school graduation rates, according to data from the state department of education. In a table on the state DOE website, Wakefield had a 93.1% high school graduation rate in 2011. Elsewhere on the North Shore, Masconomet had a 99.1% rate, trailing only three charter schools that each had 100% rates. Neighboring Lynnfield also scored high statewide with a 97.2% rating. For 2011, Wakefield had a 3% dropout rate while 1.7% of graduating students got their GED, out of a total of 231 students in the class. In contrast, some districts such as New Bedford, Lawrence and Chelsea only had about half of their students graduate last year. In Massachusetts, the statewide high school …

An Evening of A Cappella Music Coming Up

Center for Performing arts presents an evening of a Cappella on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the high school.

The following was provided by the Center For Performing Arts: The CPA is hosting an Evening of a Cappella at Wakefield High School on Wednesday, November 28 at 7 p.m.  The concert will be the first event held since the announcement of the theater’s new name –The Savings Bank Theater – in recognition of TSB’s recent major donation to the CPA and their long standing and continued support of arts in the community. Enjoy the music and dance moves of the Dartmouth Cords, one of Dartmouth College's premier all-male a cappella ensembles. Wakefield native and Dartmouth senior, Andrew Hannigan, will lead the Cords as they perform a variety of music including rock, pop, hip-hop, and holiday favorites. Wakefield Teachers And Exchange Students Visit State House

Students participating in the Italian Exchange Program at Wakefield High School recently paid a visit to the State House in Boston, where they met Rep. Paul Brodeur. Joining the delegation of students were Wakefield teachers Andrew Moody and Paula Guttadauro, and Wakefield Selectman Patrick Glynn. Two teachers from Rome, Donata Foschini and Susan Langerfeld, also made the trip.

The following is an announcement from the Wakefield Memorial High School Alumni Foundation: Wakefield Memorial High School Alumni Foundation will be working the football crowd at the Friday, Nov. 2 game at Landrigan Field, beginning at 7 p.m.  Stop by the Alumni Foundation table, see what the Foundation has to offer, to present and future members.   If you join the Alumni Foundation that evening, you'll receive an Appreciation Card to use at participating Wakefield businesses. PHOTO: The Warrior Emerges

Master chainsaw carver Jesse Green was outside Galvin Middle School Thursday working on a Wakefield Warrior sculpture that will be delivered to the high school later in the year.

As hundreds of local trick or treaters and their parents made their way around the downtown area Thursday evening, Jesse Green was in town working on his chainsaw carving of a Wakefield Warrior. Green was not expected to finish the sculpture during his appearance but is instead expected to continue working on it in the coming weeks and then deliver it to Wakefield High School at some point in the coming weeks.

WHS Dancers Holding Fundraiser For Orange Bowl Appearance

WHS Varsity Dance Team holding fundraising pre-holiday girls night out Nov. 3 at The Greatest Bar on Friend Street in Boston to raise funds for upcoming halftime performance at the Orange Bowl.

WHS Students In The Running To Appear On 'High School Quiz Show'

Students from Wakefield and 94 other Mass. high schools compete at WGBH on Nov. 4.

Students from Wakefield High School will join academic teams from 94 other Massachusetts public high schools at WGBH in Brighton on Nov. 4 for a chance to compete on season four of High School Quiz Show. The show is hosted by Billy Costa, who is shown in the photo at right. The “Super Sunday” event will pit each academic team of four students in an identical oral quiz of 100 questions. The top 16 schools will advance to appear on the TV show, which is a single-elimination bracketed academic tournament that runs from eight qualifying matches up to a state championship match. This year’s season will also wrap up with a Bay State vs. Granite State showdown for the first time.  “It was our hope to create a showcase for academic achievement …
