The following was provided by the Wakefield Rotary Club: The Wakefield Rotary Club celebrated Veterans’ Day early with a joint meeting with the Reading Rotary Club this past Tuesday. The club welcomed World War II veteran Morley S. Piper. A Second Lieutenant in the Army, Piper recounted his first-hand experiences of the Normandy invasion. He was among the first to land on Omaha Beach during the infamous WWII conflict as a 19 year-old officer.Piper only recently began speaking about his experiences. “It was so fitting for our clubs to hear Mr. Piper on election day,” noted Reading Rotary Club President Brian Crosby. “We owe all of our veterans a thank you for allowing us to continue to exercise our freedoms, including our right to vote,” …

Wakefield unveiled a new monument dedicated to World War II Veterans and dedicated the former "upper common" to become the Veterans Memorial Park.

After two years of fundraising and effort, the World War II Committee unveiled the new monument dedicated to the soldiers who died fighting in World War II. Wakefield gathered together in the center of town on November 11, at 11 a.m., to honor all the fallen service men and women of World War II, including the 72 individuals from Wakefield who died fighting for the country and the 2,471 veterans who served alongside them. The new granite monument displays several bronze plaques listing all the names of soldiers from Wakefield who served in World War II, and a "Walk of Remembrance" to honor all those who served and who are currently serving in the military. It's a three-day weekend this weekend for most of us because of the recognition of Veterans Day on Friday, November 11th. However, this also means lots of other folks get a day off too, meaning various stores and government offices will be closed. Here's a quick rundown of the types of places that are open, but if you're uncertain, call ahead to save yourself a trip. Open: Retail stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, bars and pubs, liquor stores. Closed: Wakefield Town Hall, Wakefield Public Schools, the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library, Post Offices, banks, stock markets, federal, state and county offices.
