Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Wakefield. Event Spotlight: Thanksgiving Wine Tasting

Greenwood Wine and Spirits is having a Thanksgiving wine tasting for Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.

Come on down to Greenwood Wine and Spirits for their annual Thanksgiving Wine Tasting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Greenwood Wine and Spirits is a high-end liquor store that will be serving unqiue reds and whites, and specially crafted beers to go along with your holiday fair. Aside from the drinks, expect to try a piece of their specialty foods including cheeses, pate and crackers. The store will also be showing off their custom gift baskets and chocolates. Representative Paul Brodeur (D-Melrose) offers some holiday shopping advice: Keep it local.

As we approach the holiday shopping season, we face the frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. These marketing programs encourage consumers to rush to the mall or big box store, or to shop with their computers without ever leaving the house. There is, however, a better way to do your holiday shopping – head right downtown and patronize the local businesses of Melrose and Wakefield. Why support our local businesses?
