Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Wakefield. Rada Boutique in downtown Wakefield sells both high-end consignment and boutique items.
Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Rada Frohlichstein encourages her customers to shop locally. Different from other consignment stores, half of the store is consignment, or gently used, and the other half is upscale boutique, or brand new [pictured]. There are a few options for consigners: receive half of the proceeds, offer cash/check upfront, or receive 60-40 percent store credit, in their favor, to be used at both stores. "We have such a wide range of products that it's better for them to use store credit, and they get to keep 60 percent," Frohlichstein explained. New restaurant at 33 Tuttle Street offering diners a taste of its specialties on Saturday and Sunday.
This weekend, Wakefield’s newest restaurant, Laurie’s 9:09, celebrates its grand opening with an open house on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. The restaurant, located at 33 Tuttle Street (near the train station) will feature stations for patrons to try a wide variety of dishes, from clam chowder and lobster sliders to rack of lamb, roasted tenderloin and, oysters on the half shell, and the Laurie’s 9:09 Crabcake, among other dishes, all of which can be sampled for $24.99. Following the open houses, the restaurant will begin serving its regular menu Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sundays from noon until midnight. Meet Christy Dole, proprietor of the new Balance Yoga Studio on Main Street.
Wakefield's newest business - Balance Yoga Studio - will mark its grand opening this Saturday, Oct. 27 from noon to 2 p.m. in its location at the rear of 364 Main Street, (The Alano Building) The studio's yoga classes will begin their normal schedule starting Monday, Oct. 29. Christy Dole, a Woburn resident who has been practicing yoga for 12 years and teaching it for 2, is offering a variety of holistic health options geared toward all ages. Dole is also a Reiki master and is trained in integrated energy therapy - which is focused on releasing emotions from the body.
