Wakefield High quarterback James Bourque threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns, as the Warriors beat Lexington 20-14 to start the season.
With 12 seconds left in Saturday’s game against Wakefield, Lexington quarterback Conor Murray threw a 30-yard pass to the front-left corner of the end zone, which landed incomplete, just inches over the outstretched hands of a diving Samir Pathan. Two failed hail-mary attempts later, and Lexington walked off the field, having lost 20-14 to their Middlesex League foe in the teams’ opening game of the season – and George Peterson’s first as coach of the Minutemen. “We’re building to what we need to be,” said Peterson, who replaced Bill Tighe, the team’s coach for the past 36 years. “We played hard, and that’s all you can ask for.” You didn’t have to look to the sideline to realize that the veteran Tighe was no longer around. The Wakefield High girls lacrosse team fell to Lexington, 16-6, to open the season.
The Wakefield High girls lacrosse team started its season off with a 16-6 loss to Lexington High School (1-0) on Tuesday at Lexington’s Lincoln Field as wind whipped rain pellets onto the field and turned umbrellas inside out. “Very rough day,” said Wakefield head coach Cara Luca. The team, who went 2-17 in its 2010 season, hadn’t had any preseason scrimmages as they were cancelled because of snow, leaving the Warriors with just two outside practices prior to Tuesday’s season-opener. “So it was pretty tough,” continued Luca. “I lost a lot of seniors last year and this year my whole team is all veteran players except for maybe like four, so hopefully we’ve learned from this. We have a lot to work on.” The Warriors went down 5-0 at 16:38 in…

Three Lady Warriors suffered injuries on the court in the Jan. 25 matchup with Lexington at Lexington.
The Wakefield Memorial High School girls’ basketball Warriors exemplified their name in every way Tuesday night even in their 45-24 loss to Lexington High School at Lexington’s Ralph Lord Gymnasium. Both the girls' and boys’ varsity basketball games last night doubled as Coaches vs. Cancer fundraisers for Children’s Hospital Boston, with proceeds from ticket sales, concession stand sales and a 50-50 raffle benefiting cancer research. The game got off to a rough start in the middle of the first quarter when Warrior Danielle Joly injured her ankle. Three more Wakefield injuries followed, with one every quarter. “(Danielle) Joly injured her ankle,” WMHS coach Meghan O’Connell said. “Looks like she sprained some ligaments. (Margaret) Hartrey…
In their Jan. 25 matchup at Lexington, the Warriors succumbed to the Minutemen, despite a late fourth quarter offensive push and outstanding shooting from Keyon Armstrong.
In an aggressive game that saw both teams fall into foul trouble, the Wakefield High School boys' basketball team lost 54-43 to Lexington High School Tuesday evening at Ralph Lord Gymnasium. Both the boys' and girls' varsity basketball games last night doubled as Coaches vs. Cancer fundraisers for Children’s Hospital Boston, with proceeds from ticket sales, concession stand sales and a 50-50 raffle benefiting cancer research. Members from both Lexington teams also carried donation buckets through the stands during the games. On the court, the game got off to a heated start, with both teams getting into foul trouble early on. Aggression and frustration were voiced by both coaches and players after a few whistles for fouls, but Wakefield …
