LETTER: Remembering Phil Porter

Send letters to the editor and local opinion pieces to william.laforme@patch.com.

To the Editor: I was saddened to hear recently that former Wakefield resident Phil Porter passed away. For many years Phil was a welcome fixture at Town Meeting.  On issue after issue, he was well-informed and represented a much-needed point of view.  In many ways he set the standard for accountability, asking the right questions that every citizen should ask when local tax and budget matters are at hand. Before he moved to Leominster several years ago, Phil compiled a record of service to the Town of Wakefield including work on the charter commission in 1998.  His convictions were sincere and revealed great purpose. Phil was a very personable fellow. Not long after I moved to Wakefield, Phil offered me his most precious asset: time.  In …

LETTER: Fundraising Days Partnership Program Benefits Local Area

Send your letters to the editor and local opinion pieces to william.laforme@patch.com.

Letter to the Editor: With the beginning of the new year, it feels like a nice time to thank everyone in the community who has supported The Chocolate Truffle throughout 2012. As participants in the annual Shop the Block event and supporters of the national Buy Local initiative, we thank everyone who chose to spend their shopping dollars in Reading, and particularly at our store. And, we are proud to say, we were able to give back to the community we live and work in through our Fundraising Days Partnership Program. Through our Fundraising Days Partnership Program, we were able to contribute $681 last year, with $241.68 going to Understanding Disabilities. Our 2012 partners included Friends of Reading Public Library, The Purpose School of …

LETTER: Brown’s Health Care Policy Harmful For Seniors

Send letters to the editor and local opinion pieces to william.laforme@patch.com.

According to the 2010 Census, 3,671 people age 65 and older live in Wakefield, and every one of them should be deeply concerned about Republican Scott Brown’s health care policy.  The centerpiece of Brown’s health care policy is working to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the federal health care reform law known as ObamaCare. National health care advocacy organization Community Catalyst Action Fund released a new analysis finding that, if the Affordable Care Act (“ObamaCare”) is repealed, senior citizens in Wakefield and across Massachusetts will be saddled with higher costs and fewer benefits. ObamaCare, as it is known, lowers seniors’ Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket costs by an estimated $500 per year.  This means that, if Republican …

LETTER: Scott Brown For U.S. Senate

Got a letter to the editor or a local opinion piece? Email it to william.laforme@patch.com.

To the Editor: I am writing to voice my support for Sen. Scott Brown, in what has become an increasingly important election. My reasons are simple:  Brown is a fiscal conservative, a social moderate who respects all beliefs and refuses to force his own beliefs on others, and he continues to make a concerted effort to “reach across the aisle” on all important issues before the U.S. Senate.  He actually reads the bill before he votes on it, in order to make the best decision for Massachusetts rather than just get the best sound-bite in the news. My concern with his opponent is equally as simple:  she has a rigid stance on all issues that simply toes a party line.  In her second debate with Brown, when asked which Republican senator she would…

LETTER: Let Me Warn You

Send letters to the editor and local opinion pieces to william.laforme@patch.com.

“Let me warn you and let me warn the Nation, against the smooth evasion which says, ‘Of course we believe all these things; we believe in social security; we believe in work for the unemployed; we believe in saving homes.  Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present Administration is doing them.  Just turn them over to us.  We will do all of them – we will do more of them, we will do them better; and, most important to all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything.”  FDR’s 1936 speech to the New York State Democratic Convention. The GOP lie, in a nutshell.  Obama is depending on people’s intelligence.  Romney is depending on their ignorance.  Wake up America!    Sincerely…

When you're out of ideas, and can't justify your own performance, just say the other guys lie. Yeah, that's the ticket! Oh well. Our welfare state is working so well there's no need to try anything different. Nevermind that the poverty rate has gone up consistently since LBJ. Silly me!   more ›

I would like to express my appreciation to all of the hard working people who made the Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012 State Primary Election a success in Wakefield.      The Town Clerk office staff of  Rosemary Morgan, Mary V. Dechant, Marilyn Bowen and Mary Dumont persevered through all of the work involved, and Joe Puleo, Computer Consultant, worked tirelessly to make sure all of the voting equipment was in perfect condition.   Special appreciation must be given to Rosemary Robertson who expertly manned the phone on election day, and Jerry Sweeney, Deputy Warden of the Tabulation Center who was invaluable as always.      My gratitude particularly extends to Marilyn Bowen, Head  Warden,  and Wardens Linda Byam, Thomas R. Campbell,  Bob Foley, …
