STILL STANDING: Tierney Defeats Tisei [VIDEO]

The battle for the 6th District seat is over.

Congressman John Tierney has defeated Republican challenger Richard Tisei in an extremely tight race for Massachusetts 6th District congressional seat. This has been an unusually high-profile congressional race in Massachusetts, which is considered a stronghold for House Democrats. Tierney suffered from the impact of a family scandal involving his wife, her brother and her brother’s illegal offshore gambling business. Tisei, on the other hand, climbed to popularity with his aggressive campaign, his theme of bipartisanship and his years of serving in the state legislature. He out-raised Tierney in campaign donations every quarter. Tisei made Tierney’s family legal scandal a focus of the campaign, calling Tierney’s credibility into question…

I used to live in Massachusetts, and I know how idiotic the voters there are--they keep voting in the same slimy, paid off criminals year after year. I hope you enjoy all the higher taxes, higher unemployment, higher energy costs, inflation and misery coming everyone's way now that you dumb democrats have reelected an inept, progressive, socialist liberal president hell bent on making "everyone …   more ›

TELL US: What is Deciding Your Vote for Congress?

There are many issues in the 6th District congressional race. Which one is the big factor for you?

The election is less than two weeks away. In the Massachusetts Sixth District, voters will decide who their next congressman will be. Incumbent Democrat John Tierney is in an intense race against Republican challenger Richard Tisei and Libertarian Daniel Fishman. The campaign has gained national attention. Legal drama involving Tierney's inlaws, Tierney campaign talk of Tisei having radical right-wing connections, and the emergence of Fishman's outside-the-box third party effort have made the race eventful, to say the least. All this, in the midst of a federal budget crisis, Medicare, student loans, abortion, high unemployment and more. We want to know what issue is the biggest deciding factor in your vote in the 6th District race. Discuss…

Boston Globe Endorses Tisei

Will it have impact on the race?

Republican congressional candidate Richard Tisei has picked up the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper, The Boston Globe. The newspaper cited Congressman John Tierney's family legal issues combined with Tisei's politically moderate nature: "Tierney’s family scandal — and his evasive handling of it — gives voters a reason to look elsewhere. Meanwhile, he has an appealing Republican challenger, a moderate who served with distinction as minority leader in the state Senate. This year, Sixth District voters should elect that challenger, Richard Tisei." The editorial says that while Tisei is further to the right than the majority of voters on some issues -- citing his call to repeal the Affordable Care Act -- the newspaper says that he …

I have been a long time supporter of Tierney, but It is hard to believe he had no knowledge of what his wife and her family were doing. I am voting for Tisei!   more ›

Tierney Goes for Jugular on NECN

The congressman called his opponent "shameless" and "irrelevant."

Democratic Congressman John Tierney brought sharpened teeth to the debate with Republican opponent Richard Tisei on NECN Thursday, and he wasted no time digging in. Just one day after the 6th District congressional candidates gathered in North Andover for a debate, the two appeared on "The Broadside" with Jim Braude and left most of the pleasantries at the door. Tierney faces an intense battle for reelection, with many polls showing Tisei either ahead of him or surging upward, and the eight-term congressman worked to aggressively take his opponent down a few notches Thursday -- attacking his decades-long state legislator record and calling him "shameless." Video of the entire debate can be watched on NECN's Web site. Early on, the focus …

Congressional Candidates Talk Business at NAHS

The event was hosted by the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Candidates in the Massachusetts 6th District congressional race - Incumbent Democratic Congressman John Tierney, Republican Richard Tisei and Libertarian Daniel Fishman - gathered at North Andover High School Wednesday night to debate issues important to voters. Hosted by the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce and moderated by Chairman Sal Lupoli, the debate lasted about an hour and focused on issues relating to small business and job growth. In what may at this point seem like a surprise, the debate focused on policy issues instead of personal issues. Tierney's wife Patrice and her family legal issues were not even mentioned. Tierney faces an intense battle for reelection, as many polls have showed Tisei either ahead of him or surging …

Fishman Calls Foul on WCVB

The Libertarian candidate is not invited to attend a debate.

For a recent Fox 25 congressional debate, John Tierney chose not to attend. But now, another local news station is asking another candidate to do the same. Libertarian candidate for Congress Daniel Fishman says that he doesn't qualify to participate in WCVB's hour-long debate to be held on Oct. 25. "My first reaction was shock," Fishman wrote on his Web site. "At each debate we have put on a strong performance, and at each debate our ranks have swelled. Our campaign has serious momentum." Participation in the debate, Fishman said, depended on certain criteria: A candidate must have a certain number of staff members, a daily campaign schedule, communicate on a regular basis with news media, garner at least 10 percent in two recent …

George Costanza Enters 6th District Race

The Seinfeld character is being used in a new Tisei ad.

Just when you thought the heated 6th District congressional race couldn't get weirder, in walks George Costanza. A new video ad by Republican Richard Tisei's campaign features a scene from the popular 1990s TV show "Seinfeld," in which George Costanza tells Jerry Seinfeld, "It's not a lie if you believe it." The ad then shows Congressman John Tierney telling a reporter that Republicans "are anti-human rights, anti-women rights, they are anti-middle class." The video ad is in response to Tierney's latest ad attacking Tisei as being a right-wing extremist and supporting right-wing views on social issues. Tisei's record, however, shows a moderate -- if not fairly liberal -- history on social issues. During his time in the State Senate, he …

Tierney Takes on Family Issues, Says Tisei is Using it 'To Get to Me'

The three candidates for the Sixth Congressional District debated at Danvers High School on Wednesday night.

Congressman John Tierney was the first one to bring up his wife’s family’s legal problems during Wednesday night’s debate, accusing Republican challenger Richard Tisei of attacking his wife’s family to get to him. It was an issue that was left out of the first debate involving the two in Lynn last week and a topic that the Boston Herald had previously reported would be left out of several debates at the request of Tierney. “You attacked my wife and her family as a way to get to me,” Tierney said to Tisei, who was seated on the opposite side of Libertarian candidate Daniel Fishman of Beverly on stage in the auditorium at Danvers High School. Tierney’s statement came in response to a question from Salem News Managing Editor Helen Gifford …

Tierney, Tisei Tussle Over TV Ad

The ad once again says Tisei is a right-wing extremist.

It's just a few weeks from the election, and the battles are getting more intense in the 6th District congressional race. Congressman John Tierney's campaign has released an ad once again labeling Republican Richard Tisei as a right-wing extremist. This time, however, the Tierney campaign is accusing Tisei of being anti-abortion. The ad, which can be viewed here, starts with Tisei referring to the national Republican platform by saying "it is what it is." The spot then goes through a list of anti-abortion measures Republicans have supported -- including a constitutional amendment to ban abortion without excpetions for rape or incest and defunding Planned Parenthood -- and ties them to Tisei's candidacy. It also lists votes Tisei has cast …

Fox 25 Debate: Tierney's Empty Chair

The congressman was absent as the other two candidates in the race discussed campaign issues.

File this one under "Campaign 2012 Oddities." Fox 25 hosted a debate for the 6th District candidates Thursday evening, but there was one noticable absence: incumbent Congressman John Tierney. Tierney did not attend the debate, as illustrated on the coverage with an empty chair with a microphone on it. "We have asked the congressman repeatedly here at Fox 25 to join us at this debate," Fox 25's Maria Stephanos said. "We gave him a whole host of dates that he could come in going all the way back to Sept. 20. His campaign has declined our request again and again saying that he has a full schedule." Republican Richard Tisei was there, with Libertarian candidate David Fishman of Beverly. "I feel a little like Clint Eastwood that we're going to …
