5 Events in Boston This Weekend: Bruins Hockey, White Rabbits, and Marathon Carbo-Loading

Five things to do in Boston this weekend, all accessible via the MBTA.

1) It’s playoff hockey season, and the Bruins are off to a good start, beating the Washington Capitals 1-0 in overtime Thursday night. It’s nigh impossible to get a ticket to Game 2 through legal channels, but you can take part in the playoff atmosphere around the TD Garden at several Boston landmarks, including The Fours, Sullivan’s Tap and Halftime Pizza. The game starts at 3 p.m. Saturday, but it’s a safe bet the revelry starts well before then. Take  the commuter rail from Wakefield to North Station, then the Orange Line to North Station. 2) The good folks at Improv Asylum know how to bring the funny. You can check out their latest effort, “Siri, Can You Title Our Show For Us?” at the group’s main stage on Hanover Street. Tickets are $…

Schools Eye Raising Fees for WHS Hockey Players

As part of their budget discussions, members of the Wakefield School Committee and the School Department discussed raising the fees students would have to pay to play ice hockey to help cover the enormous cost of renting ice time for practices and games.

There's an elephant in the room when it comes to paying for Wakefield High School sports. And it's wearing ice skates. The costs associated with running the Wakefield High School hockey program are astronomically higher than other sports and clubs due to the need to rent ice rink time. One season can cost up to $40,000 for just ice time rental alone, according to the School Department. Wakefield High School boasts an incredibly successful boys and girls hockey program, with both teams often making the state tournament, and in the case of the boys' team, two finals appearances in the last two seasons. Still, constraints on the school's budget have the School Department and the Wakefield School Committee possibly eyeing uneven sports fees …

Warriors Will Play in Division I North Finals on Monday Night

The Warriors couldn't be denied, winning 2-1 in a shootout over Chelmsford.

Wakefield's irrepressible Warriors, seventh seed in the 14-team Division One North Sectional bracket, will play for the championship Monday night following an exhausting 2-1 win over six-seed Chelmsford in a game that came down to a shootout after the teams battled to a 1-1 score in regulation and one overtime.  The Lions took a 1-0 lead at the 5:42 mark of the first peiod when David DeDonato tucked a shot behind Wakefield goalie Joe Cerulo, assisted by Jon Fairbanks. It stayed that way throughout the second period as both teams played close checking defense that opened few good scoring opportunities.  And when opportunities beckoned, Noble and Cerulo held their opponents at bay. With a large contingent of rabid student fans for both sides…

Pickens and Doherty Take Ice in Boston Hockey Showcase

Sean Pickens and Kevin Doherty competed at the Hockey Night In Boston Major Showcase in Haverhill.

Two hockey stars from Wakefield who both helped lead their teams to the Division 1 state tournament took to the ice once again at the Hockey Night in Boston Major Showcase at the Haverhill Valley Forum in Haverhill on July 28. The tournament, which draws the top high school hockey talent from the eastern and Midwestern United States as well as Canada, has been a fertile ground in producing NHL stars over its 39-year history. Players such as Jeremy Roenick, Jon Quick, and Brian Leetch all played in the Major Showcase before moving on to the bright lights of the pros. Sean Pickens, a rising junior at Austin Prep, played the Suburban squad, where he racked up 12 points during his sophomore season. He said he feels that playing against some of…

Photos: Warriors Fall in State Title Hockey Game at the Garden

Wakefield High's Cinderella season came to an abrupt halt yesterday at the hands of Marshfield. The Warriors fell 3-2 in the Division 1 State Championship Game.

[Editor's note: It was erroneously reported on March 21 that Chris Perry suffered a severed femoral artery. He experienced a deep cut, but it did not sever an artery. The article has been updated to reflect this.] BOSTON--Marshfield senior captain Chris Perry composed quite the inspirational tome in order to help get his teammates revved up for their Division 1 State Championship showdown with streaking Wakefield High at the TD Garden yesterday. The inspiration he ended up providing, however, came in a much different manner. After seeing Perry carted off the ice about halfway through the game with a severe 12-inch gash to the inside of his right leg, the Rams rose to the occasion, overcoming a 2-1 deficit and skating to an inspired 3-2 win…
