Weekly Sports Roundup, October 24-30

A look at all the local sports action from Wakefield last week.

The Wakefield High football team took another step on the road to the Middlesex League Small title on Oct. 28, with a solid 37-7 demolition of Stoneham at Landrigan Field. The Warriors racked up 30 unanswered points before finally conceding a score in the fourth quarter. Dan Cardillo set the tone early for the home team with a game-opening 72-yard kickoff return, while Josh Puccio rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries. Signal caller Jamie Bourque was 13-of-25 through the air, collecting 180 passing yards and a touchdown. Wakefield (7-1 overall, 3-0 league) has three games left in the regular season—including two league games—and holds a one game lead in the ML Small standings. The Wakefield High football team took over first place in the Middlesex League Small School Division last week with a 14-6 home win over Burlington on Oct. 21 in conference play. The Red Devils’ Marcus Odiah staked the visitors to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, while their defense kept the Warriors off the board heading into the half. Wakefield got its act together after the break, and a third-quarter rushing touchdown by Josh Puccio from seven yards out tied the score, while Brian Auld’s PAT provided what would prove to be the winning point. The Warriors added another score in the final frame when James Bourque connected with Matt McKenna for a 20-yard touchdown, and Auld added another PAT to provide Wakefield with its final margin of …

A look at all the local sports action from around Wakefield last week.

The Wakefield High football team made it three dominant wins in a row on Oct. 6, thumping Arlington 28-7 at their place to improve to 4-1 on the year. The Warriors reach the season’s mid-point on the strength of a remarkable three-game run, during which they’ve outscored their opponents by a 98-14 margin. Josh Puccio scored a pair of first-half touchdowns—the first for over 50 yards—and led the charge as the Warriors put up 28 unanswered points against the baffled Spy Ponders. Dan Cardillo and Matt McKenna both added touchdown receptions for Wakefield. Only an Arlington touchdown with less than a minute to play in the game ruined the Warriors shut out bid, but this, combined with the other recent strong outings from the team, should …

Wakefield High football improved to 2-0, girls and boys soccer faced losses, field hockey and golf took wins over Melrose, and more sports news.

Football The Wakefield High football team improved to 2-0 against teams from the Middlesex League Large School Division, and 2-1 overall, with a 33-0 whitewashing of Winchester on Sept. 23 at Landrigan Field. Wakefield picked up the convincing homecoming-day win thanks to a tremendous team effort that saw five separate Warriors reach the end zone. Leading the charge offensively was Josh Puccio, who collected 97 yards and one touchdown—a 3-yard jaunt to open Wakefield’s account on the day—while Zach Bates picked up 65 yards, also hitting pay dirt with a 15-yard score in the second quarter.
