Youth Saves Neighbor's Home from Fire on Daniel Rd.

The 13-year-old's quick response to seeing flames in his neighbor's backyard helped save his neighbor's home from further damage.

Joseph Rando, a 13-year-old 7th grader at St. Joseph's School, had been minding his own business. He had been playing basketball in his own yard on Daniel Rd. on a Sunday afternoon. Suddenly, he started smelling smoke and feeling extra heat in the air. That's when he turned to see flames shooting up over his neighbor's wooden fence in his backyard. "I saw the smoke in the air and smelled it too," he said. "My neighbor likes to burn wood, but this time I saw that his fence was on fire and I ran to tell my mom." Joseph's mother, Korinne Rando, ran outside right away at her son's insistence. "He said, 'Mom, come outside, this doesn't look right," she said. Rando said she grabbed the phone and went outside. Fire Log for Monday, April 23 to Sunday, April 29, 2012: Total calls for service: 41 Fire incidents: A large fire that consumed a car port and a fence broke out in the backyard of a Daniel Road home on April 29, according to the Wakefield Fire Department. Firefighters responded to 29 Daniel Road around 1:30 p.m. for a report of a structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke showing in the backyard of the home, and a car port fully involved with flames. The fire was contained to the area of the car port and an adjacent fence. The house sustained some additional heat damage to windows, but was otherwise undamaged from the fire.
