Art Exhibit Highlights Wakefield Talent

Juried art exhibit this week was part of the ongoing celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Americal Civic Center building.

A number of Wakefield artists were featured in a juried art show at the Americal Civic Center. The show, part of an ongoing celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Civic Center building, came together in the space of only about three months, organizer Cheryl Webb Scott told Wakefield Patch on Thursday. Scott recalled how earlier this spring, a lecture at the civic center highlighted prominent past local artists such as Franklin Poole, a 19th Century Wakefield painter. From there, the idea for a show featuring the town's current artistic talent emerged. "The idea was to show the very best that was available from Wakefield artists," said Scott, adding that she had been excited to see artists submitting other media as well, including …

Wakefield Landmark Turned 100 This Week

The former state armory, now the Americal Civic Center on Main Street, was dedicated on January 15th, 1913.

Earlier this week, Wakefield's Americal Civic Center marked its 100th anniversary. The former armory building was dedicated back in 1913 and now plays an important role in everything from the town's business community to its events calendar. Looking back a century, the Wakefield Daily Item wrote in its January 16th, 1913 edition that "It may sound like a well-worn and in fact somewhat frayed assertion to remark that Wakefield probably never knew a more brilliant combined military and civic event." The dedication was attended by Massachusetts Governor Eugene Foss and 500 people, including numerous military veterans, officers and public officials. The four surviving charter members of the Richardson Light Guard were also on hand, which was …

New Painting To Help Mark 100th Anniversary Of Civic Center Building

In January, Wakefield's Americal Civic Center marks 100 years since its construction as a National Guard armory. New painting by Elizabeth Lowry will help mark the occasion.

On Wednesday night, directors of the Americal Civic Center in Wakefield unveiled a new portrait of the building, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in January. The painting of the civic center is by Elizabeth Lowry of Wakefield, whose specialties include home and building portraits. The painting was funded with a grant from the Massachusetts Arts Council. Cheryl Webb Scott, a founding board member of the Americal Civic Center, told Wakefield Patch that the unveiling of the painting is a good way to start getting the word out about the 100th anniversary of the building. The "Wakipedia" page for the civic center, run by the Wakefield Library, reports that the name was changed to Americal in 1976 and that the Americal Civic Center …
