The following was provided by The Jimmy Fund: Two local Wakefield businesses are joining Rally Against CancerSM to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. Team Optum Wakefield led by Lisa Matthias and Team Interactive Data led by Deborah Bresnahan are “rallying” to win a visit from one of this year’s Rally Spokesplayers, Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks or Boston Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. When the Red Sox suit up against the Baltimore Orioles on Opening Day at Fenway Park Monday, April 8, Red Sox Nation is encouraged to Rally Against Cancer. 28-mile bike ride from Lynnfield to Gloucester raises funds to research cancers that affect young adults and adolescents.
Registration is now underway for the 9th annual Reid’s Ride, which takes place this Sunday, July 21, 2013. The 28-mile ride from Lynnfield to Gloucester helps raise money to fight cancers that often strike adolescents and young adults. The event is in memory of Reid Sacco, a 2003 Lynnfield High School graduate who died of cancer at age 20. Last year's event raised about $150,000, with more than 300 riders participating from towns across the region. Last year was particularly significant for Reid's Ride, since it marked the establishment of the Reid R. Basketball semifinal game against North Andover is on Wednesday in Lawrence.
The Wakefield High School boys basketball team is taking on North Andover in an MIAA North Division 2 semifinal game this Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Lawrence. Wakefield defeated Lynn Classical 64-63, in a Saturday home game to advance to the March 3, semifinal. North Andover, a #2 seed, is coming off a 66-49 win over Concord-Carlisle, the #7 seed. The Division 2 final game will be played at the Tsongas Center in Lowell with a date and time to be announced. In other MIAA tournament action over the weekend, the Wakefield High School hockey team lost a 6-5 overtime game to Winchester, which goes on to play Waltham in the North Division 1 semifinal on March 7th.

Saturday night Malden Catholic High School hosted Saint Joseph School Wakefield (SJS) as they competed for and won the championship title of Junior Division for the Middlesex Catholic Elementary School Basketball League against Revere’s Immaculate Conception (IC) with a 38 -25 win. The SJS 5th and 6th grade boys’ team finished the season with an undefeated record this season. Sixth graders Joe Greenwood and Nick Scarpello lead the way for the Hawks offensively while Casey Brackett, Frank Cancelliere, Matt Farrell and Sean Clark all had key defensive plays to limit IC’s scoring. Fifth graders Dan LaMonica, Alex Pacy and Matt Fish all had a great night and each assisted the offense and defense with some key plays including a basket by Dan…

The Brewers, sponsored by The Savings Bank, were crowned champions of the 2012 Twi-League Baseball League after defeating Highlife in the finals. Brewers Matt Fiore, left, and Mike Greer, right, recently showcased the Chuck Oates Memorial Trophy to Raichelle Kallery, center, Senior Vice President – Marketing at The Savings Bank. In addition to playing on the team in the adult summer league, Matt and Mike also served as student officers of the 1st Educational Savings Branch of The Savings Bank during their senior year at Wakefield High School.

WHS takes on Malden Catholic at home in first round MIAA tournament action.
The Wakefield High School boys basketball team begins its playoff run Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. home game against Malden Catholic. Wakefield, a #3 seed in the MIAA Division 2 North basketball tournament, had a 15-5 record in the regular season and has a first-round bye. The winner of the Tuesday night game goes on to face either Beverly (#6)or Lynn Classical (#11) in the first round.

Dan Gill, member of the Wakefield High School wrestling team, featured in region's media for match against state champ.
A 16 year old Wakefield High School student with Down’s Syndrome was highlighted in the region’s media recently for his match against a state champion wrestler. As described in this report from CBS Boston, Dan Gill wrestled against 2012 state wrestling champ Steven Giampapa, who attends Burlington High School, and was able to walk away with a win to his credit. Elsewhere, a report on Fox 25 Boston quoted Dan’s mother, Lauren, as saying that the match “was the world to my son that night. A video can viewed here at this Huffington Post link.

Wakefield resident and Skating Club of Boston member Stephen Carriere conducted master class on Frog Pond in Boston.
With the U.S. Figure Skating Championships having been recently completed in Omaha, the skating world is now looking ahead to the 2014 championships at the TD Garden in Boston. In these photos, Stephen Carriere of Wakefield, a Skating Club of Boston member, helped kick off the one-year countdown to the Boston championship with a master class for local public school students on the Frog Pond in Boston. Carriere was 10th in the championship men’s free skate at the 2013 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Omaha. He is also an alternate for the upcoming Four Continents Championships in early February in Osaka.

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian recently lost a bet over the AFC Championship game.
Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian followed through on his promise and delivered New England Clam Chowder to Waltham-based REACH Beyond Domestic Violence on Tuesday. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Koutoujian, who lives in Waltham, delivered the chowder to the domestic violence assistance organization to pay off the bet he made with Baltimore Sheriff John Anderson over the outcome of the AFC Championship football game during which the New England Patriots lost to the Baltimore Ravens. The chowder will go to domestic violence victims. “REACH is an organization with whom I have had a long affiliation. While I may have lost the wager, there is no reason both REACH and House of Ruth Maryland should not be winners,” Koutoujian said …
