In honor of Fenway Park's 101st season, we have put together some fun facts about baseball's crown jewel that you may not know.
In honor of Fenway Park’s 101st season kicking off today, we thought we would honor that “lyric little bandbox,” as writer John Updike famously called it, that has become as much a part of Boston as dropped “Rs,” the Charles River and disgraced public officials, with some fun facts, courtesy of funtrivia.com and baseball-statistics.com. So without further ado, here are some things you may not know about Boston baseball’s holiest of holies: Check out this report of Fenway’s first game, penned b y Boston Globe scribe T.H. Murnane. We would love to hear our readers’ memories of Fenway over the years, and would love to share some of ours. Tell us your favorite Fenway Park moments in the comments below, and let’s get this discussion started!
Is it more of the same? Or will the Sox respond?
A 1-5 start by the Red Sox has put a quick damper on the optimism of sunny Fort Myers spring training. But even managing just one win before opening day at Fenway is an improvement on last year. And, in case you don't have a good memory or decided to repress the last month of last season, the 2011 Red Sox didn't finish so well, either. Fenway Park is celebrating its 100th anniversary today. The team that played the inaugural season at Fenway? They won 105 games and beat the Giants in the World Series. But as Rick Pitino might say, Smokey Joe Wood isn't walking through that door. This season, the Red Sox have changed their manager and management. They've shuffled around some pitchers, added some outfielders and changed their shortstop. But …

How optimistic are you on opening day for the Red Sox? Let us know by taking our poll and posting a comment.
The Red Sox play the Tigers for an opening day game in Detroit Thursday, April 5 at 1:05 p.m. Some say the season could go either way, especially after last year's September collapse. We want to take your opening day temperature. So let us know how you're feeling about this season by taking this poll. And feel free to elaborate in our comment section below.

Burlington defeated Wakefield 4-2 last night to punch its ticket to the Division I State Championship at TD Garden on Sunday.
LOWELL—During the regular season nothing could separate these two hockey teams. Wakefield High and Burlington played each other twice. The result was a pair of draws. They even split the Middlesex League Small School title. Last night at Tsongas Center, however, separation didn’t appear to be an issue for the speedy Red Devils, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two periods of hockey and never looked back. Top-seeded Burlington beat the defending champion Warriors and won the Division I North crown, 4-2, behind a spirited offensive performance and a solid night from netminder Derek DeCastro (28 saves). Burlington will take on South champs Milton on Sunday at TD Garden for the Division I State Championship [Starting time is still TBA]. …
The Warriors battled, but in the end, the No. 1 seed Burlington High School was just too much, taking a 4-2 win and the Division I North championship on Monday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.
LOWELL— Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Burlington High boys hockey team is headed for a Garden party. The Red Devils downed the defending North champion Wakefield Warriors, 4-2, last night at Tsongas Center in the Division I North title game. The Red Devils will now take on South champs Milton at TD Garden on Sunday. The starting time is still TBA. Burlington struck first with 4:18 left in the opener, when Joe Scali beat the Warriors Joe Cerulo to open the scoring. Dan Metzdorf and Joe Moran picked up the assists. The Red Devils (16-1-6) jumped all over their rivals and co-champs from the Middlesex League Small School Division in the second stanza, scoring three goals to put this one away. Brett Romkey picked up Burlington’s second …

Despite a spirited attempt at a dramatic fourth quarter comeback, the Wakefield boys basketball team fell to Brighton last night in the Division II North title game.
LOWELL—The Wakefield High School boys basketball team reached the Division II North Championship game by pulling off an improbable win over top-seeded North Andover on March 8. They just didn’t have another upset in the tank. The fifth-seeded Warriors tremendous season came to an end last night at Lowell’s Tsongas Center as Wakefield succumbed to an athletic and hungry Brighton squad, 66-59, in the MIAA Division II North final. The third-seeded Bengals got a game-high 19 points from Malik James, and will face South champions Stoughton on Monday at TD Garden in the Division II State Semifinals. Daivon Edwards added 11 points for the victors. For Wakefield head coach Brad Simpson, there is no mystery to why his team came out on the wrong end…
