During Student Government Day, students play the role of elected or appointed officials to better understand what that individual’s role is in state government. Students also participate in mock debates, simulated committee hearings and House and Senate formal sessions. Sofia Pagliuca, 18, of Saugus, who attends Wakefield's Nazareth Academy was selected to be part of the April 13th program which brings in students from all over the state to learn about the role of state government. A student from Wakefield's Nazareth Academy served as the state's "Governor for a Day" in April. The following is the speech she made to the students and legislators on 21st Century learning. ---- Lieutenant Governor and fellow Constitutional Officers, Madame President, Madame Speaker and Members of the Senate and of the House, Members of the Judiciary, and other distinguished guests; Being the proverbial “number one” can sometimes be quite a difficult position to maintain. Once considered “the first” or “the best,” the hopes of who you are and who you will become are elevated significantly.  Be it in school, on a sports team, or even in your own family, the moment that you exceed people’s expectations, those people can rightfully …

Wakefield Schools' Business Administrator Michael Connelly Leaves for Lincoln-Sudbury

Wakefield Public School's current business administrator Michael Connelly will begin a new position in Lincoln-Sudbury on July 1.

Michael Connelly, who has served as Wakefield Public Schoool's business administrator for the last four years, has accepted a new job as finance director in Lincoln-Sudbury. Connelly said the excitement of a new job at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School is a bit offset by the relationships he'll leave behind in Wakefield. But the current Wakefield business administrator said the opportunity to join L-S as its new finance director was something he couldn't turn down. "I sort of decided a month or two ago to start looking for new opportunities," said Connelly, who was unanimously voted in by the L-S Regional High School Committee on Monday. "When I saw the Lincoln-Sudbury opening and did some research, it seemed as a very professional, …

Mr. Connelly will be greatly missed in Wakefield. He was instrumental in implementing strong financial controls and understanding his role in ensuring the funding for education was spent wisely. He was exceptional at responding promptly and appropriately to requests from the public, staff, and School Committee (of which I was a member during his tenure). The LSRHS community is very fortunate and …   more ›

State Funding Approved for New Galvin Middle School

The Massachusetts School Building Authority approved a $32.6 million grant for a new middle school in Wakefield and an additional contingency grant, for a total reimbursement rate of 54.6 percent.

The state of Massachusetts has approved its share of funding on Wednesday for a new Galvin Middle School in Wakefield. The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) announced at its March 28th meeting that it will contribute an estimated state grant of $32.6 million to Wakefield's $73.6 million plan for a new middle school. The state also approved an additional $2,057,957 million contingency grant available to the town, which would raise the total state reimbursement to 54.6 percent of elligible costs. This additional grant ensures that Wakefield taxpayers would not be responsible for added costs if the final project total exceeds $74 million. “Today’s vote is the culmination of months of intensive collaboration between Wakefield and …

Relief Coming for Schools Frustrated with Blocked Websites

An agreement has been reached between the town and the schools on their web filtering policies.

Teachers and students could start seeing more and more unblocked websites as of March 18, due to an agreement reached between the schools and the town's IT deparment over its web content filtering policy. Since the town and school IT departments combined last year, teachers, faculty and students had been claiming that the sheer number of blocked websites were hampering the student's learning proccesses. "Web content filtering is crushing us at all six schools," said Elaine Hughes, a teacher and the education technology administrator in Wakefield, at a School Committee meeting back in January. Schools Eye Raising Fees for WHS Hockey Players

As part of their budget discussions, members of the Wakefield School Committee and the School Department discussed raising the fees students would have to pay to play ice hockey to help cover the enormous cost of renting ice time for practices and games.

There's an elephant in the room when it comes to paying for Wakefield High School sports. And it's wearing ice skates. The costs associated with running the Wakefield High School hockey program are astronomically higher than other sports and clubs due to the need to rent ice rink time. One season can cost up to $40,000 for just ice time rental alone, according to the School Department. Wakefield High School boasts an incredibly successful boys and girls hockey program, with both teams often making the state tournament, and in the case of the boys' team, two finals appearances in the last two seasons. Still, constraints on the school's budget have the School Department and the Wakefield School Committee possibly eyeing uneven sports fees …
