Two Alarm Fire Damages Salem Street Home

Firefighters from several surrounding communities helped bring fire under control.

A home behind the Willow Tree Garden and Flower Center on Salem Street in Wakefield was damaged in a two-alarm fire early Thursday afternoon. Stoneham and Reading joined Wakefield at the fire scene. No information was immediately available from the fire department on a suspected cause of the fire or the extent of damage. Firefighters ventilated the roof after the fire was out because of the thick smoke, and no injuries were reported.

Sisters of Injured Brothers to Walk Marathon Route One Month After Bombing

One month after the bombings, the sisters, along with an uncle, of injured Stoneham natives and brothers JP and Paul Norden will walk the 26.2 mile Boston Marathon route Wednesday in support of their brothers.

One month after the bombings, the sisters, along with an uncle, of injured Stoneham natives and brothers JP and Paul Norden will walk the 26.2 mile Boston Marathon route in support of their brothers, according to a CBS Boston report. Each brother, who were reunited at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown, lost a leg, suffered burns and shrapnel wounds during the attack. National Police Week 2013: Candles Raised for the Fallen

People from around the country take part in a candle-light vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial to honor the fallen including officers from Massachusetts.

More than 19,000 names of fallen law enforcement officers are etched into the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC -- and more are added every year. The keepers of the police memorial figure one law officer in the United States dies in the line of duty every 57 hours. For this year's ceremony, 321 names were added to that wall. Among them: Middlesex County Correction Officer James Callahan, Sr., who died in 1973 due to a heart attack after being assaulted by an inmate and Woburn Police Officer John P. Gibbons III, killed in the line of duty on May 4, 1999. Gibbons suffered a fatal heart attack after being kicked in the chest by a woman while responding to a disturbance call. Fund Established for Wakefield Family After Last Week's Fire

The Collins Family Fund aims to help Wakefield family with two small children following last week's devastating fire on Gould Street.

Update: A neighbor reports that due to a strong outpouring of community support, the Collins family no longer needs clothing and toy donations. A fund has been set up for the Wakefield family who lost their home in a fire last week. The fire on Gould Street rekindled in the overnight hours of Friday morning after a small fire was doused at the scene Thursday evening. The house was a total loss. According to a post on the Massachusetts State Police Facebook page, the Collins Family Fund has been set up for Rick and Heather Collins and their two children. Gould Street House a Total Loss After Fire

Fire thought to have started in the basement. Home had balloon-frame construction and sustained at least $500K in damage, reports Wakefield Fire Chief.

A pedestrian walking on Gould Street called 911 soon before 1 a.m. Friday morning to report that flames were showing from a home that had been the scene of a small fire earlier in the evening. When firefighters arrived, Wakefield Fire Chief Michael Sullivan told Wakefield Patch that they found a large body of fire spread across the front of the house, with a second alarm almost immediately struck by Captain Riley. During the initial fire Thursday evening, Sullivan told Wakefield Patch that the fire had started in the basement and that its cause had yet to be determined. In a follow-up call Friday morning, Sullivan indicated that the cause of the fire was still thought to have been in the basement. A couple of large appliances were …
