Town Meeting 2012: Day 3 Preview

Whether to allow bed and breakfasts to operating in town and whether or not to allow sidewalk cafes in town are still up for debate, as well as an assisted living development.

On the third night of Wakefield's Town Meeting residents still have some notable decisions to make, including whether to allow bed and breakfasts, whether to allow sidewalk cafes in town, and whether to approve an assisted living facility on Crescent Street.  The issues of bed and breakfasts and sidewalk cafes are ideas by the economic development committee with hopes to help expand commerce in the downtown area.  The assisted living facility would be a series of units of more than 500 square feet each with parking requirements of one space for every three units. It would also be allowed to have hairdressers/barbers, retail sales, and a dining room available for its residents.  Monday's edition of town meeting will begin on Monday, May 21 …

And with the summer season starting up, residents are sure to start lining up for a cone or a cup at their favorite shop.  Do you have a favorite ice cream shop in town? I love the old-time atmosphere of Cravings and that you can go and in and sit down at booths. In addition the fountain, candy counter, help-yourself candy jars, gourmet chocolates, ice cream cakes and hand-packed ice cream to take home. what's more to love? Oh yeah, it's right in town so you don't need to drive out to the edge of town and townies can even walk there. The portions are large, the …   more ›

Letter: Tisei's Latest Poll Numbers Misrepresent Facts

Wakefield resident Fred Rich LaRiccia writes about the latest poll results released by the Tisei campaign.

So, not satisfied that his negative, guilt-by-association, innuendo-ridden, gutter attacks (ITEM 3/15/12) against Congressman John Tierney orchestrated the desired public outrage, 'has-been' career politician Richard Tisei now releases a so-called internal campaign poll from GOP pollster John McLaughlin purportedly showing him 7 points ahead.  Increduously, the poll also shows Scotty 'Etch-a-Sketch' Brown up 24 points over Elizabeth Warren in the 6th Congressional District. But wait, look again; the poll is garbage!  "The GOP poll does have elevated Republican representation," McLaughlin said in an e-mail to the Salem News.  The actual makeup of registered voters in the district is: 13% Republican, 30% Democrat, and 57% Independent.  But …

Sen. Clark: The Economic Case for Early Education

State Senator Katherine Clark (D-Melrose) writes about the importance of early childhood education and how Massachusetts is investing in early literacy.

[The following was submitted by State Sen. Katherine Clark.] Last week I co-hosted a legislative briefing on the importance of early childhood education with Arthur Rolnick of the University of Minnesota’s Human Capital Research Collaborative and a former economist at the Federal Reserve. Professor Rolnick’s research makes the economic case for early childhood education through new data and a comprehensive 40-year study.  Professor Rolnick and his colleagues have quantified the returns on investment in early education: boosting labor productivity, increasing tax revenue, and reducing by up to 50% costs associated with special education services and crime. Their essential argument is that if children show up to Kindergarten ready-to-learn …

I can't believe Stop n Shop won over Market Duniya or any of the other smaller shops around. We really need someplace new though. I'd love to see a Trader Joe's in Malden. Save me the weekly trip down the hell that is Route 1 to Saugus.   more ›

PAWS Pet of the Week

Adopt Iron, A Brave Cat Who Wants a Home

This brave cat wants a home with no drama.

What would you do if there was a raccoon eying your babies?  You would grab a baby and run. That is how I ended up at PAWS. That raccoon was scaring me, so I took one baby in my mouth and started across the street.  That seemed unwise, so I headed back. I guess some people noticed me looking indecisive and worried. It was my lucky day when I was rescued with that kitten in my mouth. It was an even luckier day because my rescuers went back and looked around and found my other three kittens.  We were taken to a warm place with great food and nice people. My kittens grew up fat, sassy and safe and they all got adopted. It’s only me left now and I am looking for a home of my own. One without drama. That one exciting day was enough for my …
