Resident Funds Wakefield Buyback Program on June 29

Wakefield residents are encouraged to take part in a gun buyback program funded by a local woman honoring the victims of Sandy Hook.

Due to the generosity of one Wakefield resident and the participation of the Wakefield Police Department, a gun buyback progarm will be held at the end of the month in dedication to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.  Wakefield resident Barbara Laramine has offered to fund the program in honor of the victims; $2,600 total, $100 for each of the victims.  The Wakefield Gun Buyback program will be held on Saturday, June 29, at the Wakefield Police Department headquarters at 1 Union St. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  "The buyback is open to Wakefield residents to provide an opportunity to safely dispose of working guns that are no longer used, needed, or wanted. Two Facing Drug, Warrant Charges After Stolen Car Recovered

Car reported stolen out of Reading was spotted on Quannapowitt Parkway Tuesday afternoon. Suspects arrested soon after.

Wakefield Police arrested two men on various charges Tuesday afternoon soon after a car they allegedly stole was located on the Quannapowitt Parkway near Comverse Boulevard. Around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police spotted the vehicle, which was the subject of a BOLO alert by Reading Police. The two suspects were also seen walking toward the Colonel Connolly Beach on the lake. While Reading Police took custody of the vehicle for its owner, Wakefield Police arrested Robert Rossi, 28, no address given, and charged him with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, possession of a Class A drug (Heroin), possession of a Class B drug (Suboxone) and possession of a class E drug (Metformin). He was also arrested on a warrant for possession of a Class A drug. …

Several Arrests, an Odd Solicitor, and a Rabid Raccoon

Wakefield Police responded to these and other calls for service on Monday, June 17, 2013. At 9:51 a.m. police arrested Mark B. Hatch, 51, 24 Cedar Street, Wakefield, and charged him on a warrant. At 10:21 a.m. police were informed a motorist struck a deer near Vernon Street and Juniper Ave. At 12:05 p.m. an accident was reported near North Ave. and Quannapowitt Parkway. At 1 p.m. police took a report involving check fraud. At 1:50 p.m. an individual reported his email account was hacked into. At 3:22 p.m. an attempted credit card fraud was reported on North Ave. At 3:25 p.m. police took a complaint about a dirtbike near Drummer Lane. 4th Annual Festival Italia Set for Mid-August

Wakefield's annual Festival Italia is August 16 and 17 this year, starting with Friday night dinner at the Sheraton Colonial.

Retired State Trooper Recalls Whitey Bulger Wiretaps, Investigation

In the 1980s, Arthur Bourque was a member of the Mass. State Police Major Crimes Unit working to bring down Whitey Bulger's gang with electronic surveillance and wiretaps. But Bulger's connections ran deep.

Arthur Bourque of Lynnfield, the current town moderator and a former selectman there, has more reasons than many people to follow the ongoing Whitey Bulger trial. In the 1980s, the retired Massachusetts State Trooper was a member of the major crimes unit working to bring down Bulger's Winter Hill gang through constant surveillance, wiretapping, and even a break-in at the gang's Lancaster Street Garage headquarters to plant electronic bugs. What the unit had no way of knowing at the time was that their investigation was compromised by Bulger's own informants. In a recent conversation with Lynnfield Patch, Bourque talked extensively about his law enforcement career, which began in 1971 when he joined the Mass. State Police at the age of 21. …
