Plein Air Paint Out – for kids, too! Knife Sharpening, Cooking with Holly

Lots going and and plenty of vendors, but a few vendors needed to take the week off. Read on for all the news and updates!

Scroll down to the end for links to all our vendors!

The 5th Annual Plein Air Paint Out is the headliner this week, with the much-welcomed appearance of Patti and On the Edge Knife Sharpening, a cooking demo by our chef Holly, and a good chance of live banjo music adding to a perfect mix of events at our market this Saturday.

Artists can register for the Paint out online up until midnight 9/13 or in person between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. the day of the event.  Seewww.wakefieldpaintout.org for more information.

JUST FOR KIDS! The first twenty-five young artists  to ask will be given a box of crayons and provided with a clipboard and paper to create their own plein air picture. Be sure to bring the art back to the Community/Paint Out table so we can put it on display on the center tent where Holly will be cooking!

Holly Pierce will be back this week with yet another tasty and informative Cooking Demonstration in the center tent from 10-noon or so. This is a great opportunity to learn new cooking techniques and taste combinations featuring the wonderful produce that is in season right now. As always, you get to try a bite.

NEWSFLASH: Come early if you want to get your cutlery in line in time to be sharpened by Patti of On the Edge Knife Sharpening!

Ed Britt and Don Borchelt, our favorite banjo duo, hope to provide us with live music this week but can’t guarantee it as of the press deadline.  Get better soon, Don!!!

Our nonprofit guest this week is Devereux Massachusetts, whose mission is to provide specialized home-based foster care to a diverse population of at-risk children and their families. You can learn more about this group at www.devereux.org.

Our balloon twisting artist Yarrow will be with us this week, and, as always, sidewalk chalk and hula hoops will be on hand for kids of all ages.

Thanks to everyone who pledged at www.lovemyfarmersmarket.org! Our market was # 26 on national top 100 list – that is out of over 8000 farmers markets in the United States! Even if you didn’t have a chance to pledge, thank you to everyone who supports our market by shopping with our vendors, hanging out to enjoy the scene, and/or lending valuable volunteer support.

Kittredge Candles will be making their last visit of the season, so be sure to stock up this Saturday! Esthetician and soap maker Andrea Corkum of Kalaidascope Soap and artisan Jeanette Dion of Salem Street Beadery will also be with us this week

And, as always, Bark for More will be on hand with both frozen and baked doggie treats.

VENDOR SCHEDULE CHANGES: Charlton Orchards and Globe Fish are taking this week off but will be back as usual next week and for the rest of the season.  In Good Taste (Pam’s Salsa) had to cancel, also, but will be back for their last visit of the season in two weeks.

In addition, DD’s Dressing (www.ddsdressing.com) will not be back this year, but you can find their product at Farmland. We will miss you, Elisabeth! Also, Nobscot Artisan Cheese (www.nobscotcheese.com) had to cancel for the rest of the season. We will miss their wonderful cheese as well as Deb’s presence at the market. Be sure to visit the websites to see where you can purchase their products!

Luckily, we will still have plenty of farmers and other vendors on hand, so come prepared to shop!

As the season's bounty continues to grow and change, Farmer Dave and Kelly's Farm will have plenty of wonderful produce on hand, and Flats Mentor Farm will have their lovely selection of Asian vegetables, greens, and herbs.

Copicut Farms will, as always, have their freshly slaughtered pasture-raised chickens and fresh eggs. Along with whole and pieces, you can get parts for soup, as well. See the online newsletter for a great chicken stock recipe! And, we expect John Crow Farm to be here with their great variety of cuts and types of meats and poultry, as well as fresh eggs, all from pasture-raised animals.  They send their apologies for last week’s last minute cancellation.

Samira’s Homemade will have their wonderful Middle Eastern foods and don’t miss the super frozen pastas and entrees, as well as fresh mozzarella products, from Fior D’Italia.

Mamadou’s will have their amazing artisan breads, Swiss Bakers their delectable assortment of breads and pastries, and The Popover Lady will have her amazing popovers, as well as tasty fruit pies and scones.

Coutt’s Specialty Foods and 7ate9 Bakery will also be making their bi-weekly visits this week.

Ben’s Sugar Shack has all things maple, and will also have iced coffee on sale.  Try it with the maple sugar! And, last but not least, Goodies Homemade will, as always, be on hand with their fabulous cookies.

The market accepts credit and debit cards as well as SNAP/EBT cards in exchange for “Market Bucks,” and, thanks to another generous grant from Melrose Wakefield Mass in Motion, the market will match SNAP/EBT purchases up to $10 per visit so all our neighbors can afford to eat healthy local foods!

Coming Up: Live music includes Chris LaVancher on 9/21 and 10/12, Audie Bridges and Steve Tapper on 9/28, and Kevin G. Moore on 10/5, and Ed Britt and Don Borchelt (banjos) back on 10/19. Drumlin Farms Audubon Ark will visit on 9/28 and PAWS will be bringing some kittens to visit on a date in October.  Something for everyone!

The Wakefield Farmers Market runs RAIN OR SHINE (except in dangerous weather, e.g. lightening or hurricane conditions).  The market opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 1:00 p.m. every Saturday through October 19, 2013.  Please visit www.wakefieldfarmersmarket.com for a complete listing of vendors and upcoming events and to sign up for the email newsletter.  You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter. See you at the Market!
