Last Market Day of the Season! Live Banjo Music, Cooking with Holly, Barefoot Books

Looks like great weather for our last market day of the season! Come enjoy the music, learn some cooking tips, and stock up for the winter and the holidays with great fare (and some sales!) from our wonderful vendors. See you at the market!

Scroll to the end for links to all of our vendors.

It is time to stock up your cupboards and freezers, and also get a head start on your holiday shopping, with all the wonderful fresh produce and specialty food items from our vendors on this last market day of our 2013 season.

To add to your gift shopping pleasure, we have an excellent selection of artisan products this final Saturday, as well, including Wicked Good Soap with lovely handmade soaps and scrubs, handcrafted herbal products and more from Trow’s Treasures, Barefoot Books with top notch children’s books and educational fare, and Angelica Tiles, with lovely tile coasters.

SALE! Angelica Tiles is offering a special of 3 sets of 4 tile coasters each for $20, perfect to have on hand for last minute holiday or hostess gifts.

SALE! Buy 3 or more books from Barefoot Books and get 10% off your entire purchase providing you mention that you saw this advertisement.

Holly Pierce will be on hand with another delectable Cooking Demonstrations during which she will share handy techniques and delicious flavor combinations as she whips up a few great recipes for you to try at home and taste test right at the market. Look for her at the cooking tent next to the Market Manager Tent from 10:30 – noon or so.

Banjo masters Ed Britt and Don Borchelt will start playing right about 9:00 a.m. and provide great live music during a good part, if not all of our market day. Not only are old timey banjo songs the perfect background music for a farmers market, these guys are really, really good. Be sure to stop by and have a listen!

Our nonprofit guest this week will be Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society (PAWS). Their mission is to promote and protect the rights and well-being of all domestic animals and wildlife and foster greater understanding of animal welfare and animal rights through education as well as programs such as pet adoptions, low cost spay/neuter services, and feral colony management. Do stop by to learn about all the important good works done by this group and how you can help. To learn more now, see pawswakefield.rescuegroups.org.

Yarrow will be sending a balloon twisting colleague to be with us since he has another engagement. I wonder if it will be Mike, Blake, or someone new? And, as always, we will hula hoops and sidewalk chalk on hand for kids of all ages.

There will again be hot cider (purchased from Charlton Orchards, of course!) and the makings for hot tea or “pretty darn good” instant coffee available at the Market Manager tent, as well as a jug of filtered ice water for anyone with a thirst for a hot or cold drink.

The Fish Lady, Michelle of Globe Fish, would like to remind folks that she will be doing Christmas deliveries this year. To participate, stop by our market THIS SATURDAY 10/19 and make sure she has your email address. And, of course, pick up some of her wonderful seafood while you are there.

Flats Mentor Farms will have their beautiful Asian greens including gorgeous Swiss chard, kale, and parsley. Along with some summer veggies, the winter squashes, root veggies, and potatoes are in full force from Farmer Dave, Kelly’s Farm, who also has gorgeous cut flowers, and Charlton Orchards, who also has local honey, their own wine, and pasture-raised beef and eggs.

Copicut Farms will, as always, have their freshly slaughtered pasture-raised chickens and eggs. I just tried one of their stewing hens this week – just cook long and low or pop into a pressure cooker and you’ll have moist and delicious chicken, or add veggies for a wonderful meal in a pot stew.

NEWSFLASH: this is the last week to order a Thanksgiving Turkey from Copicut Farms!

We are hoping John Crow Farm with be with us on this last market day, with their great variety of cuts and types of meats and poultry, as well as fresh eggs, all from pasture-raised animals, but won’t know for sure until after this goes to press.  Check the WFM website or Facebook page for updates.

Samira’s Homemade have their wonderful Middle Eastern foods and Fior D’Italia will be back this week with their gourmet pastas and mozzarella cheese and more.

Keep in mind that breads freeze well, so stock up on Mamadou’s amazing artisan breads, Swiss Bakers delectable breads and pastries, The Popover Lady’s yummy popovers, pies, and scones, and, of course, the best cookies around from Goodies Homemade.

Ben’s Sugar Shack has all things maple, as well as honey and preserves, all making great holiday gifts. And, adding to the shopping variety, Coutt's Specialty Foods will be with us again with the very best preserves around, and Stir It Up Cuisine will be here, too, with their delicious hot pepper jellies and their torts, which freeze nicely.

Bark for More has great doggie frozen yogurt, baked treats that can be frozen, and dried treats, as well, so don’t forget your canine friends when holiday shopping!

The market accepts credit and debit cards as well as SNAP/EBT cards in exchange for “Market Bucks,” and, thanks to another generous grant from Melrose Wakefield Mass in Motion, the market will match SNAP/EBT purchases up to $10 per visit so all our neighbors can afford to eat healthy local foods!

One last thing: Carrots! Don’t forget to get a “Carrot!” To learn more about this campaign to support WFM and all farmers and farmers markets, and to get your very own Carrot, be sure to stop by the Market Manager tent!

Coming Up: Be sure to sign up for our email newsletter via wakefieldfarmersmarket.com and/or friend us on Facebook to get news about our vendors and where to find them or order from them during the winter months and to be the first to hear about next season!  The tentative start date of our next season is June 21, 2014.

The Wakefield Farmers Market runs RAIN OR SHINE (except in dangerous weather, e.g. lightening or hurricane conditions).  The market opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 1:00 p.m. every Saturday through October 19, 2013.  Please visit www.wakefieldfarmersmarket.com for a complete listing of vendors and upcoming events and to sign up for the email newsletter.  You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter. See you at the Market!
