Knife Sharpening, Live Music with Fiddlin' Quinn, and Food Preservation Demos!

Live fiddlin' with 8 year old Fiddlin' Quinn, learn how to preserve foods for the winter, last chance for cheesecake, and a final visit from the knife sharpener. Come on down!

Wondering how to get that irreplaceable taste of locally grown, just-picked produce once the market season is over? Read on!

Jane Hammer, director of Shared Harvest CSA and long time dedicated local food eater, grower, educator, and advocate, will share some of her skills and practical tips for eating healthy, local food through the New England winter.

Jane will also demonstrate one of the easiest and most nutritious methods of preserving vegetables: lacto-fermentation, and bring handouts and displays about sourcing, storing, and preserving our local farm bounty for the winter including techniques, recipes, guidelines for storage in existing areas you may have in your home. Demos will be at 10:30 and noon.

Jane also happens to be the mother of our musician guest this week.  :)

Eight year old Quinn Eastburn, aka Fiddlin’ Quinn, will be performing with his Dad from 10:00 – noon. Quinn has been knocking audiences' socks off for half his young life with prodigy fiddle chops and driving harmony singing. This summer he toured from Boston to Seattle with his Big Folks Band and this fall Quinn is performing around the Boston area including opening for Pete and Maura Kennedy at Linden Tree Coffeehouse here in Wakefield on Nov. 2.

See http://www.fiddlinquinn.com to learn more about this talented young artist.

Our nonprofit guest this week is Friends of Lake Quannapowitt (FOLQ). From testing the water, and hosting cleanups around the Lake to heading up efforts addressing the goose and utility pole issues, the folks at FOLQ continue to work hard to protect and enhance the waters Lake Quannapowitt and its surrounding lands.

Currently, FOLQ is seeking more members for its Water Quality Committee that is researching and developing a new long-range plan to guide our efforts to protect water quality in our lake. Stop by to say hello and find out how you can help.

NEWSFLASH: Come early if you want to get your cutlery in line in time to be sharpened by Patti of On the Edge Knife Sharpening!  This will be her last visit of the season.

Local authors Doug Heath and Alison Simcox will be selling the books they have authored about local landmarks, one about Lake Quannapowitt and their latest all about Breakheart Reservation.  Both are chock full of history and beautiful photos of two of Wakefield’s finest natural and recreational assets.

Our balloon twisting artist Yarrow will be with us this week, and, as always, sidewalk chalk and hula hoops will be on hand for kids of all ages.

VENDOR UPDATE: Fior D’Italia (The Pasta Man) will NOT be with us this week but will be back next week for our final market day of the season.  John Crow Farm will also not be here but hope to be back next week.

Charlton Orchards will have apples galore and fresh cider, along with assorted produce, honey, wine, and their pasture-raised beef and eggs. NOTE: They probably won’t have their big truck, but they will be in their regular spot.

Copicut Farms will have their freshly slaughtered pasture-raised chickens and eggs. If you have not yet tried local pasture-raised poultry, eggs, or meats, do so.  You will really taste the difference!

NEWSFLASH: Copicut Farms is taking turkey orders for Thanksgiving. Take is from me. They have really excellent turkey.

Freshly caught seafood tastes better, too, and the selection from The Fish Lady, aka Globe Fish, is always the best you can get.

NEWSFLASH: It is starting to get chilly, so we will have Hot Mulled Cider at the Manager Tent along with hot water for coffee and tea.

As the season's bounty continues to grow and change, Farmer Dave and Kelly's Farm will also have plenty of wonderful produce on hand, Kelly's will have their beautiful cut flowers, and, as always, Flats Mentor Farm will have their lovely selection of Asian vegetables, greens, and herbs.

Coutt’s Specialty Foods, with wonderful preserves and more will be with us this week and next week, but this week will be 7at9 Bakery’sLAST VISIT of the season, so get your cheesecake this Saturday!

Samira’s Homemade will have their wonderful Middle Eastern foods – have you tried the baklava? Not too sweet and a bit of crunch. Just delightful.

Mamadou’s will have their amazing artisan breads, Swiss Bakers their delectable assortment of breads and pastries, and The Popover Lady will have her always amazing popovers, as well as tasty fruit pies and scones.

Ben’s Sugar Shack will be on hand with has all things maple (have you tried the maple cotton candy?) and Goodies Homemade will, as always, be on hand with their fabulous cookies.

Artisan vendors this week are Kalaidascope Soap, Salem Street Beadery, and the final visit of the season from Ellen Garvey aka EGlassy Lady and her spectacular hand-blown glass items.  Look for her over by Flats Mentor Farm's location.

The market accepts credit and debit cards as well as SNAP/EBT cards in exchange for “Market Bucks,” and, thanks to another generous grant from Melrose Wakefield Mass in Motion, the market will match SNAP/EBT purchases up to $10 per visit so all our neighbors can afford to eat healthy local foods!

Coming Up: Our final market day of the season will feature live music with Ed Britt and Don Borchelt (banjo players extraordinaire), a fall bounty cooking demonstration by Holly Pierce, and all the vendors who can make it so you can get a head start on your holiday gift and meal shopping!

The Wakefield Farmers Market runs RAIN OR SHINE (except in dangerous weather, e.g. lightening or hurricane conditions).  The market opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 1:00 p.m. every Saturday through October 19, 2013.  Please visit www.wakefieldfarmersmarket.com for a complete listing of vendors and upcoming events and to sign up for the email newsletter.  You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.
