Kid’s Cooking with Holly, Drumlin Farms' Audubon Ark, plus Live Music with Steve Tapper and Audie Bridges

Great weather and great day for kids! Cooking, Live Music, Small Creatures - What's not to like?

Scroll to the end for links to all of our vendors

It’s another great weekend for kids at the market!  Holly Pierce will do a special Cooking with Kids demonstration over next to the Market Manager tent from 10:30 to 11:30 or so, Drumlin Farm’s Audubon Ark will be at the market from 11:30 -12:30 with some small creatures for us to meet, and Barefoot Books will be with us all market day long with their wonderful books and other educational fare, as well as a nice spot to sit and read a for bit if you’d like.

We will have live music from 10:00 – noon by guitarist Audie Bridges (of Betty’s Bounce) and flutist Steve Tapper playing a wide variety of music, including jazz, folk, blues and world music. This will be quite the treat! To hear music by this talented duo and for more information, check out tapperandbridges.com.

Or nonprofit guest will be the Wakefield Alliance Against Violence
WAAV encourages and supports education about problems of violence, and works with interested community agencies and institutions in and around Wakefield, Massachusetts, to reduce instances of violence. Stop by to say a hello and to learn more about the important work being done by this group.

Local authors Doug Heath and Alison Simcox will again be selling the books they have authored about local landmarks Lake Quannapowitt and Breakheart Reservation.  Both are chock full of history and beautiful photos of two of Wakefield’s finest natural and recreational assets.

As always, we will have our balloon twisting artist with us, and sidewalk chalk and hula hoops will be on hand for kids of all ages.

NEWSFLASH:
More info to come, but we will have Jane Hammer of Shared Harvest CSA doing food preservation demos on October 12.  Stay tuned!

If you are doing any canning this year, pick up some money-saving coupons for Ball ™ and Kerr ™ products at the Market Manager tent.  Also, you can order cases of produce from our farmers for larger scale preserving.

Charlton Orchards IS BACK!  Along with assorted produce, honey, wine, and pasture-raised beef and eggs, apples and cider will be the big items this week. Farmer Dave and Kelly’s Farm will also have a variety of apples, as well as fall squashes, along with all their other wonderful produce. Get here early if you want some gorgeous cut flowers from Kelly’s Farm.

Flats Mentor Farm
will have their beautiful and tasty Asian greens, veggies, and herbs. I am hoping they will still have squash blossoms. Have you tried them?  They are great just for munching, but I also put them in everything from soups and salads, to my special omelet filling and the Alfredo sauce I make to go with Fior D’Italia’s pasta. Just don’t eat the stamens – they are bitter!

John Crow Farm
will have their super variety of pasture-raised cuts and types of meats and poultry, as well as fresh eggs, and Copicut Farms will, as always, have their freshly slaughtered pasture-raised chickens, whole and parts, and fresh eggs as well.  And, now is the time to place turkey orders for Thanksgiving from either farm!

We’ll have a number of our bi-weekly vendors with us this week, including Coutt’s Specialty Foods with their yummy preserves and relishes and 7Ate9 Bakery with their fantastic cheesecakes. I even had one of their mini cheese cakes for breakfast last time there were with us. Heavenly.

NEWSFLASH: This will be the last visit of the season by In Good Taste (Pam’s Salsa)
, who has, by far, the best salsa around!

All our other weekly vendors will be here: Globe Fish will have their wonderful assortment of freshly caught seafood,Samira’s Homemade, with wonderful Middle Eastern foods, Fior D’Italia, with gourmet pastas and entrees, as well as fresh mozzarella products, Mamadou’s and their amazing artisan breads, Swiss Bakers with all your favorites: breads, pretzels, and pastries, and the Popover Lady, with her superb popovers, scones, and pies.

For sweets, Goodies Homemade has the very best cookies around, and you will find all things maple at Ben’s Sugar Shack, as well as really tasty iced coffee.

And, don’t forget to stop by Bark for More and get some treats for your canine friends.

Kaleidoscope Soap
, with skin care expert Andrea Corkum, is here this week, as is Jeannette Dion of Salem Street Beadery.  Have you seen what she makes with sea glass? Just beautiful.

The market accepts credit and debit cards as well as SNAP/EBT cards in exchange for “Market Bucks,” and, thanks to another generous grant from Melrose Wakefield Mass in Motion, the market will match SNAP/EBT purchases up to $10 per visit so all our neighbors can afford to eat healthy local foods!

Don’t forget to get a “Carrot!” To learn more about this campaign to support WFM and all farmers and farmers markets, and to get your very own Carrot, be sure to stop by the Market Manager tent.

Coming Up: Live Music with Kevin G. Moore on 10/5 and Ed Britt and Don Borchelt (banjos) on 10/19.  10/12 will feature great food perseveration demonstrations and PAWS will be with is, hopefully with some kittens, on October 19.  Something for everyone! And, gear up for early holiday shopping on 10/19.  Every vendor who can make it will be with us. Something for everyone!

The Wakefield Farmers Market runs RAIN OR SHINE (except in dangerous weather, e.g. lightening or hurricane conditions).  The market opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 1:00 p.m. every Saturday through October 19, 2013.  Please visit www.wakefieldfarmersmarket.com for a complete listing of vendors and upcoming events and to sign up for the email newsletter.  You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.
