PHOTOS: Warriors Fall Short of Division I North Hockey Title

The Warriors battled, but in the end, the No. 1 seed Burlington High School was just too much, taking a 4-2 win and the Division I North championship on Monday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

LOWELL— Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Burlington High boys hockey team is headed for a Garden party.

The Red Devils downed the defending North champion Wakefield Warriors, 4-2, last night at Tsongas Center in the Division I North title game.

The Red Devils will now take on South champs Milton at TD Garden on Sunday. The starting time is still TBA.

Burlington struck first with 4:18 left in the opener, when Joe Scali beat the Warriors Joe Cerulo to open the scoring. Dan Metzdorf and Joe Moran picked up the assists.

The Red Devils (16-1-6) jumped all over their rivals and co-champs from the Middlesex League Small School Division in the second stanza, scoring three goals to put this one away.

Brett Romkey picked up Burlington’s second goal on the night 9:32 into the second, with Trevor Cimino and Dan McMahon on the assists. Less than three minutes later, CJ Grinnell beat Cerulo to open a 3-0 Burlington lead.

Cimino found the net with just over 30 seconds left in the period, assisted by Joe Berardi and Grinnell, giving the Red Devils a daunting 4-0 advantage headed into the final frame.

But Wakefield (12-5-6) didn’t get to this stage by being pushovers, and they had some fight left in them.

Edward Matthews finally solved the riddle of Derek DeCastro at 9:37 of the third, assisted by Kevin Doherty and Dan Cardillo, while Doherty also added the final Warriors goal of the night with under two minutes left, an unassisted tally.

Cerulo made 14 saves on the night, while DeCastro recorded 28.
