You Ask, Patch Answers: Meter Replacements

Meters will be placed at every Danvers residence in 2012.

Throughout the year Danvers will be participating in a $17 million project to replace all of the town's 13,000 electric and 8,000 water meters with "smart meters."

This week's is devoted to a simple break down the meter replacements.

What's the point of the new smart meters?

The perks of the project, according to Town Manager Wayne Marquis, include more energy effiency, as well as being able to detect leaks and problems before they arise.

By using Smart Grid, the town and customers will save money because customers will be able to make more informed decisions about their energy use.

How are residents going to find out when their home's meter will be replaced?

National Meter Services, the town's contractor, has already started replacing meters, with expectations to complete the project this by the end of 2012.

Electric customers will be notified when their home's meter will be replaced, and residents do not have to schedule an appointment. Notices will be sent out to water customers, prompting them call and schedule an appointment

In regard to the meter changes, we received the question: "Do residents hire their own plumber if they have incompatible plumbing? Does the town do it? What is involved and how much will this cost?"

We spoke with Director David Lane to find out the answer:

"We have structured our water meter installation contract to provide the necessary pipes and fittings to install the new water meter, at no cost to the customer. There will not be a problem with compatibility as long as there have been not unauthorized modifications to the original meter installation.  Additionally, if the main water shut off to the home (located just inside the home before the meter) does not work, we will be providing and installing a new main shut off.

Should we observe corroded piping or piping which is in very poor condition, in danger of failing, and this prevents us from installing the new meter, the installer will take a picture of the existing meter and piping.  A representative of the DPW Water Division will then follow up with the customer and review the repairs that need to be made by the homeowner at their expense.  We do not expect many of these situations, however are prepared to deal with them and work with the customers as they arise."

The town's official website has also launched a video of "What To Expect During Your Meter Replacement." To see the video, follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://www.danverstv.org/home.htm
  2. At the top of the page, click the Video on Demand Button.
  3. In the new window, you will see a menu on the right. Click the heading that says “Town Hall Television”
  4. The Meter Replacement Program video should be in the list.
  5. Click the video and it will start to play automatically, and it could take a couple of seconds to load.
