Mosquito Spraying in Town, Tuesday and Wednesday

Spraying in different parts of town today and tomorrow after last week's news of two trapped mosquitos testing positive for West Nile Virus.

The Wakefield Board of Health has announced that mosquito spraying will be conducted in town on Tuesday, July 30 and Wednesday, July 31.

The announcement came on the heels of last week’s news about at least two mosquitoes trapped in Wakefield testing positive for West Nile Virus. Neighboring Reading also reportedly had at least one mosquito come up positive.

The spraying in Wakefield will be done by the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project from truck mounted aerosol sprayers in some specific neighborhoods in town. If the spraying must be rescheduled for any reason, it will take place on August 5.

Tuesday’s spraying is scheduled for streets located between Prspect Street and the Reading border, and between Water Street and the Lynnfield border, the Board of Health reported.

Wednesday’s spraying is in the Greenwood section, as well as areas near Meriam Street, Green Street, Forest Street and Spring Street.

The Board of Health also noted that the spray formulation contains the pesticide sumithrin, which is reportedly a synthetic pyrethroid classified as a slightly toxic pesticide by the EPA. If residents see a spray truck approaching, they are advised to go indoors for a couple of minutes until the spray dissipates. Residents are also advised to close windows that are facing the street.
