Wakefield Man Charged With Fleeing Stop, Assaulting Officers

Suspect facing 16 separate charges from Wakefield Police. A citizen helped subdue him after his vehicle crashed into a wall.

A Wakefield man is facing a long list of charges following a Tuesday evening incident that began with a motor vehicle stop and which ended with him under arrest in an area hospital.

Lieutenant Craig Calabrese of the Wakefield Police Department told Wakefield Patch on Tuesday morning that the incident began when Officer David Rando spotted a black Acura near Lowell and Main Street with after-market purple tinted headlights and darker window tinting than is permitted by law. Rando pulled the vehicle over near Carriage Lane and Main Street.

The driver, Gregory Hampton Boyd, 20, of Wakefield, was described as nervous with shaking hands by police during the stop. A second Wakefield officer, Amy Toothaker, reportedly arrived on the scene around that point. The officers reported that the suspect was observed in his car opening a center console compartment, and they allegedly spotted a plastic baggie with a white residue.

The suspect allegedly put the bag into his mouth and tried to swallow it. Officers ordered him to spit out and to get out of the car. He allegedly refused to do so, and drove off as the officers were still trying to apprehend him. Officer Rando managed to break free, but Officer Toothaker was dragged very briefly and knocked to the ground. She suffered minor facial injuries and was treated and released at an area hospital.

Lt. Calabrese went on to report that the two officers got into their vehicles to follow the suspect, who had headed down Main Street and was not visible at that point. They soon came across the vehicle crashed into a stone wall at about 158 Main Street.

A nearby resident spotted the suspect trying to climb out of the car window and grabbed and tried to hold him until the police arrived. After police arrived, the suspect allegedly continued to fight and resist arrest and was eventually subdued with pepper spray. He was transported to an area hospital where he remained, under arrest, as of early Wednesday morning. Calabrese noted that officers also found $1,520 in cash in the car, packaged into four separate bundles.

The complete list of charges for Gregory Deron Hampton-Boyd, 20, 2 Avon Court, Wakefield, is as follows:
