Wakefield Man Charged with Murdering Wife

A 72-year-old Wakefield man was arrested early on Monday, March 28 for allegedly shooting and murdering his wife.

David McCall, 72, of 493 Lowell Street, was arrested at his home on Monday, March 28 at 8:20 a.m. after police received notification that McCall had allegedly shot his wife in their kitchen during an argument the couple was having, then attempted to shoot himself, according the Wakefield Police and District Attorney Gerard T. Leone's office.

McCall's wife, Elane M. McCall, 69, was transported to Melrose-Wakefield hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:18 a.m. She died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

McCall, whose alleged suicide attempt was unsuccessful, was arrested and booked at the Wakefield Police Station and is currently in custody.

"This is the first homicide we’ve had in Wakefield in over a year," said Chief Richard Smith of the Wakefield Police Department.  "This is an isolated incident. There’s no reason to think there’s anything other than the domestic situation we think it is right now."

He is expected to be arraigned on Monday, March 28 at 2 p.m. in Malden District Court.  More information will be published as it becomes available.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jane. Hopefully you've found that Wakefield Patch is doing its job to communicate the news while still being fair to your family... at least as much as possible in this situation. ( I can't speak for any other media).

What a horrific event. My heart goes out to the family members who are having to try to cope with this. I hope you all are able to find some peace and comfort while struggling with losing someone to each side of this tragedy.
