Basement Fire Stopped by Resident Before Spreading

A resident used a garden hose to douse a basement fire on Sunday evening.

A Morningside Drive resident is being credited with stopping a basement fire in their residence before it spread to the rest of the home.

Wakefield Fire Department Capt. Richard Smith said the basement fire didn't turn into anything worse than a "small fire" because of the quick-thinking actions of the resident.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which was reported at 5:24 p.m. on Sunday at 6 Morningside Road.

"The fire was knocked down by the homeowners," Smith said. "She did a great job; She saved her home."

The homeowner open a cellar door, went outside and grabbed a garden hose and returned inside to extinguish the fire, Smith said.

It was too early to say what was burning in the basement, Smith said. The damage was contained and the home remained habitable, he said.
