Wakefield Track and Field make a statement

In only the 2nd Indoor Track and Field season with Coach Reinoso at the helm, the Wakefield Boy's Track and Field team made a statement to the rest of Massachusetts that they are serious about competing for a state title in the coming years.
After only one win last year, the Warriors ended this season with a 4-2 overall record and 4-1 league record.  The highlight of the season came Saturday afternoon at the Division 4 State Championship when the boys started racking up points early to obtain first place going into the 2 mile, the meets last individual event.
The Warriors got things going early as Junior Jackson Gallagher won the 600 meter title with a national qualifying mark of 1:22.6.  Gallagher progressed with major improvements over the past few weeks as he broke his own school record for the second time this season.  He also came .5 seconds off breaking the meet record.
Patrick Scheeler had another great race placing 11th with a new personal best time of 1:27.47.
Anthony Lawson captured a very valuable 8 points by placing 2nd overall among the divisions best, doing so from the second heat.  Going into the meet Lawson was seeded 10th and improved by a full second as he won his heat.  His time was 36.65.
Newcomer Ian Ritchie capped off a stellar debut season by placing 8th and picking up a point that in the end allowed the Warriors to finish 3rd overall.    Ritchie, a junior, also had a personal best time of 2:43.
The Warriors had three entries in the 55 meter dash.  Junior Armin Palic had another strong performance with a personal best time of 6.85 and a 9th place finish.  Sophomores Kevin Russo and Eric Chi both ran 7.05.
In the shot put, Junior Ben Joly threw a personal best of 43'7.5", good for 15th place.
In the long jump, Junior Pat Casaletto jumped 17'11" placing 24th.
Aaron Lucci helped add to the point total for the Warriors with his 5th place finish in the 2 mile.  He had a time of 9:54.
Going into the relays Wakefield fell to 2nd place but responded with a 4th place finish in the 4 x 200 meter relay that consisted of Anthony Lawson, Kyle Geaney, Eric Chi, and Armin Palic.  They ran a 1:35.58, just .3 seconds off qualifying for All States.  Randolph won the relay and moved up to first.
Wakefield then placed 7th in the 4x800 meter relay with Gallagher, Scheeler, Lucci, and Ritchie and a time of 8:40, and scoring points, but Pembroke regained the team lead with a second place finish.
Finally the 4x400 meter team of Cam Yasi, Wil Bergendahl, Joe Hurton, and Alec Rodgers placed 14th with a time of 3:50.

Pembroke scored 50 points for the title, Randolph had 42.5, and Wakefield finished with 30 ponts.  There were close to 40 teams competing in the meet.
Gallagher and Lawson will represent Wakefield at the All State meet on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston at 9:30am.   Gallagher will be seeded 5th in the 600 meters and Lawson will be seeded 17th in the 300 metes.
The Warriors hope to carry the success from this winter into the spring season with a new track and field facility.
Spring signups will most likely be Thursday February 27th after school in the field house.  Announcements will be made at school when the date is confirmed.
