Then and Now Photo Challenge: Mystery House

Twice a month, Wakefield Patch will run a contest on the site to see if you can guess where this historical building existed. So what's your best guess?

Where in Wakefield was this building? The first reader who can a) correctly identify the building or b) give the address of where it is now will win an awesome Patch water bottle or tote bag! (Your choice).

Leave your guess in the comments section! First correct answer wins the Patch prize.

It reminds me of the house (greatly modified) standing on the corner of Eaton and Crescent Streets.

Good try, Andy, but that's not it. Hint: it's on a street that hundreds of people walk along each day!

Another hint: the house in the photograph stood on a street corner. (The street sign was photoshopped out.)

Hi, Could this be the estate of Cyrus Wakefield which would be near where the Galvin School?
Nancy Bertrand July 19, 2011 at 08:18 PM
No, it is not the Cyrus Wakefield mansion, but you're on the right track! (Hint: the house in the photo is not still standing.)

The Emerson's Estate on the corner or Main and Wave was similar in design as well.
Nancy Bertrand July 19, 2011 at 09:58 PM
You're close, Diane, but that's not it. This was the Carpenter house on the corner of Main and Lawrence Streets.

Nancy, I sent a location yesterday and signed up and in, but do not see my comment posted. Bia House was located on Main St, Lakeside Owned by Frederick B. Carpenter

Wow, compare that home to what's there now... depressing.
Sara Jacobi July 20, 2011 at 02:08 PM
Nice job Bianca! I'll contact you via email about getting you your prize!

Where exactly on Main? Beautiful home. Also, I love this segment of the Patch!
Nancy Bertrand July 21, 2011 at 02:51 AM
Sue, it was on the corner of Lawrence Street and Main Street. (And thanks for the nice comment!)
