Obituary: Kai Juel, Jr., 95

Area musician had a long and interesting career, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

JUEL, Kay, Jr. (aka Kai) Musician and band leader of Lynnfield and Wakefield, husband of the late Louise (Grissman) Juel, passed away January 19, 2014 on the eve of his 96th birthday. Kai studied violin, bass and voice in his youth and attended New England Conservatory after high school. He had a long career in music, primarily playing bass and performing in the Boston area. During the 1940s and 50s, Kai played with the Ruby Newman Orchestra and visiting notable jazz and swing bands, orchestras and entertainers, including Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and many others. Kai also led his own jazz trio in the 60s and 70s. In later years, he taught both bass and violin. He was the father of Kay Juel, III of Manchester-By-The-Sea, Richard Juel of Clinton, CT and the late Sarah van Benten of Needham. He is survived by nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A Private burial and life celebration will be held at a later date.
