Obituary: John B. Cavanagh, 84

Wakefield High School athlete went on to serve in U.S. Navy during WWII.

 John B. Cavanagh, 84, of Portsmouth, died peacefully on Dec. 4, 2013, with family at his side.

John was born in Lynn, MA, son of the late John J. Cavanagh and Amy (Dolloff) Cavanagh. He graduated from Wakefield, MA high school, lettering in football, baseball and basketball. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Jean (Corbett) Cavanagh for over 64 years. The couple previously lived in the NH towns of Gilford, Weare, Amherst and Bennington.

John served in the US Navy Submarine Service during World War II, aboard the USS Corporal. He was a life member of Pipefitters Union Local 131. John was a 32 Degree Mason and life member of the Good Samaritan Masonic Lodge in Reading, MA. He was also a long-time member of the Bektash Shriners and life member of their Drum Corps. John enjoyed the companionship of his many dogs, raising farm animals and hunting/ fishing.

Surviving family members include his wife, Jean of Portsmouth; son John Cavanagh Jr and his wife Linda, of Rye, NH; granddaughters Rebecca Burlem and husband Brandon of Hampton, NH and Jennifer Sleeper and husband Nicholas of Northfield, NH; and sister Jacqueline (Cavanagh) Mayo of Brunswick, GA.

The family will memorialize John with an interment service at the NH State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
