Obituary: George 'Mike' Angelo, Jr., 65

Well-liked coach and news photographer spent nearly 40 years working for Wakefield School System.

George "Mike" Angelo, Jr., 65, a lifelong Wakefield resident, died peacefully on December, 24, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Winchester on September 13, 1948 he was the son of the late George M. and Yolanda (Orsini) Angelo. Mike was a staple in the Wakefield community, as he was an employee of the Wakefield Public School system for almost 40 years.

He also served as a photographer for the Wakefield & Melrose Daily Item, the Wakefield Patch, and was a contributor to the Wakefield High School yearbooks, capturing many candid moments that were treasured by all. He was instrumental in creating the WHS girls hockey program and many other coaching assignments such as Babe Ruth baseball, youth soccer, and girls softball. A true passion of Mike's was refereeing many local hockey leagues, even serving as past president. His love of community was strongly shown through his pictures. He was the number one fan of all Wakefield athletics and town-wide events.

 Mike was the loving husband of Jacalyn (Nelson) Angelo. He was the devoted father of Michael J. Angelo and Jessica Flynn of Londonderry, NH, Melissa (Angelo) Ruggieri and her husband Joseph of Worcester, and Matthew J. Angelo of Wakefield. He was the brother of Janice Angelo-Boone and her husband Ron of Derry, NH, Robert Angelo and his wife Leslie of Malden, and David Angelo and his wife Donna of Saugus. He was the adoring grandfather of Joseph Michael and Jack Angelo Ruggieri. Mike is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Saturday at 9am followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 o'clock. A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday from 3 to 8pm.
