Wakefield High School Theater Arts has announced its season plans for the 2013-2014 school year. The theater group will present “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on November 22-24. In addition, the group will present “The Glass Menagerie” on February 27 and March 6 and the Broadway blockbuster “Les Miserables” on April 10-13.

"WHS Theater Arts will take a major technical theater leap in 2014 and we're excited for the community to be a part of the process," said Will Karvouniaris, the program director. "We worked hard over the summer to choose shows that will excite the community. After a successful run of Aida, we chose shows that would allow our students to challenge themselves."

WHS is one of a handful of schools across the country that is allowed to present a professional production of “Les Miserables” this year. Karvouniaris is proud that "Wakefield is part of an exclusive club in 2014. Not many programs can do what we're about to do. The talent of these students is quite remarkable. We raise our standards during every rehearsal."

The program also announced a fundraising initiative of $24,601 for this school year. Fundraising initiatives currently planned include community leaf raking. Other fundraising ideas in the works include a community pizza party and a family game night.

Because WHS Theater Arts relies on ticket sales as the backbone of its budget, Karvouniaris unveiled a plan for season tickets and theater memberships. Season tickets are available for $40 which will allow families to save money.

The theater group is currently looking for sponsorships from local businesses and restaurants. Over 2,000 people will see WHS productions this year. Karvouniaris and Sponsorship Coordinator, Sandra Blois, have developed an advertisement plan that will allow businesses to receive maximum visibility over the course of the year.
