Five Things to Know Today, August 25

Tips to prepare for Hurricane Irene, where to speak French tonight, some back-to-school info, and more things to know today.

1. Rain is possible - This morning there's a chance of showers in the forecast, then we'll see partly sunny skies with a high near 86 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

2. As a hurricane potentially approaches New England for the first time since Hurricane Bob in 1991, it's time to ask the important questions, like how many times will news media make puns on the 80s hit song "Come on Eileen"? But seriously, until we know more about whether or not the storm will barrel up the coast at full force or will just bring heavy rain and high winds, it's time to prepare. Check out these tips from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency on how to protect your home. What are you doing to prepare, if anything?

3. Channel your inner Parisian - The French Club meets at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Beebe Library. The group is a conversation group, but all levels of french-speakers are welcome..

4. WHS Welcomes New Students - The dates have been announced for Freshmen Orientation: Wednesday, August 31st at 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the field house. Incoming students will tour the school building, have student ID photos taken, and get a free pizza lunch. At 2 p.m. is the New Student Orientation Program for students new to WHS in grades 10-12. These students should report to the Main Office and will be guided to a nearby meeting room.

5. Don't be left out - Your kids aren't the only ones gearing up to go back to school. If you also want to get involved this year, there are numerous opportunities at each school for parent involvement. One such opportunity is to serve on the Wakefield High School's School Council, an advisory group to the principal that meets one Wednesday evening per month. Two openings are available for parent representatives. If you are interested in becoming a part of School Council, please e-mail your interest and a short statement for the election ballot to Principal Kim Smith at smith@wakefield.k12.ma.us. (include School Council in the subject).
