Be Nice: Wakefield's Week on Social Media

Uniting the Wakefield online community, one Facebook or Twitter page at a time.

Welcome to Social Media Saturday, your guide to what you may have missed in the social media world, and our recommendations to help guide you through cyberspace.

Want to get featured in this column? It's simple - just comment/interact with Wakefield Patch on Twitter and Facebook. I'll pick the best moments each week.

Favorite Facebook Moment of the Week:
Were the responses to this article, which featured a booking photo of a man arrested for . Generally, booking photos are not the most flattering, and apparently, this case was no different.

Facebook fan Joann Yebba Brennan compared the defendant's hair to Brad Pitt, and Regina Martine said, "I was thinking Jared Leto. Oh well."

Facebook user Dawn Coviello pointed out it's not nice to make fun of others. "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all," she said.

Of course we agree, but it did seem like minor joke made in good fun. Besides, reason #599 to avoid being charged with a felony in Wakefield is that someone could make fun of your booking photo on the Wakefield Patch Facebook page.

In other Facebook happenings:

  • In response to an article about Plymouth, MA, a cool destination less than an hour from Wakefield, Facebook fan Fred Howland said: "Great article! Just a quick note that Plymouth isn't small -- it's actually the largest municipality in the state by land size."
  • In response to an article about next weekend's tax-free holiday, David Mouradian posted, "Melrose Oriental Rug is giving an additional 10%-30% off any rug purchased as well as saving the 6.25% sales tax. Don't miss out on these savings. Reserve your choice early."
  • I posted a photo of Wakefield Patch's associate editor, Lima, who was adopted from the Salem Animal Shelter several months ago. Facebook fan Kim Bova McDonald said, "so pretty" and Facebook fan Daniel Lieber said, "Is she copying Sara Jacobi's stare?" Probably. That's how us journalists see straight to the heart of the issue.

Favorite Twitter Moment of the Week:
In response to my tweet "Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the best farmers' market of them all"? Which linked to a asking people to support it in a contest, I got several responses.

The first was from @mirror_magick, which is apparently an automatic Twitter bot that only responds to the phrase "mirror, mirror on the wall."

What'd it respond? @mirror_magick: "Why, it's you!"

Thanks, auto-robot. Now, back to real people.

@Silly1501 said "wakefield is the best..good cooking demo and great bakery foods and even lill animals for the kids.." and when I responded that he should vote, @Silly1501 said "I was about to..was out walking the lake when I read the tweet on voting."

Reading tweets and walking at the same time? Wow, you're talented, @Silly1501. I'd probably walk into a telephone pole...

In other Twitter happenings:

  • Lots of retweets on stories this week, including the event spotlight for a at and police log articles.

Must “Like” Facebook Page of the Week:
If you like to procrasinate at work by looking at photos of delicious-looking noodles, then you're going to want to "like" the Thai Cuisine Facebook page. Although this business just joined Facebook in May, we're hopeful they'll keep it updated with useful information - and of course, posting more photos right around lunchtime could entice at least one editor to order some lunch specials...
