Sakura Organic Now Open In Downtown Wakefield

One of Wakefield's newest restaurants, Sakura Organic, has been in business at 397 Main Street for about a week, with a grand opening celebration set for Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.

The restaurant, featuring sushi and Asian fusion specialties with largely organic ingredients, now occupies the space where the former Sushi Island was until its owner retired in August

In a recent conversation with Wakefield Patch, owner Mark Zhong said that this is his first restaurant. The Melrose resident and Boston University graduate also reported that he and his wife greatly enjoy downtown Wakefield and nearby Lake Quannapowitt and are considering buying a house in town. "I'm so lucky to be here in this neighborhood," said Zhong, looking outside at Main Street from his new restaurant, where the motto is "organic is healthier."

Even the soy sauce is organic at Sakura Organic, and Zhong reports that it was difficult to find the necessary suppliers at first.

The menu features a broad variety of classic sushi dishes, as well as noodles, soups, appetizers, teriyaki and more. Zhong noted that there's a gluten-free menu as well as a selection of special makis with different combinations of fusion-inspired ingredients - including mango, cucumber, and apple. "We're trying to bring something new and fresh to the neighborhood," said Zhong.

The restaurant does catering for wedding and other events, and reportedly delivers to Wakefield, Lynnfield, Saugus, Stoneham and Reading, and Zhong is considering some upcoming events there such as sushi making classes for kids.
