PHOTOS: Wakefield Rotary Takes The Polar Plunge

Wakefield Rotary members helped raise thousands of dollars last weekend to fight polio around the world.

Members of the Wakefield Rotary joined several hundred other people in Gloucester last weekend for the 2013 Polar Plunge. The event raised about $70,000 to help fight polio around the world.

Thanks to David Watts, Jr. for sending in these photos. Watts reported that the Wakefield Rotary led other chapters in fundraising with $5,432 - an amount sufficient to pay for more than 9,000 polio immunizations.

"Since the effort began, all but three countries have seen the end of new polio cases. The latest country is India. The three remaining countries are Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria," said Watts in an email to Wakefield Patch, noting that a program about this will be airing soon on Wakefield Cable Access TV's public channel.
