Nonprofit Working To Help Libraries Damaged In Typhoon Haiyan

Local nonprofit sends books for kids and young adults to libraries in impoverished communities in Philippines. Seeking a hand from individuals, groups or businesses.

A local nonprofit needs children’s books to help re-stock libraries in the Philippines destroyed during Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 5,500 people in the Philippines in November.

Locally, members of local nonprofit BKP have long met at Centre Congregational Church in Lynnfield to pack and ship donated books to libraries in impoverished communities in the Philippines. The group’s name, Bagong Kulturang Pinoy means “New Filipino Culture” in Tagalog. BKP also holds its annual dinner/dance fundraiser each October at the Wakefield Elks Club.

In a recent conversation with Patch.com, Judith Babcock, executive director of BKP, reported that the group has been working to provide books and school supplies for three towns affected by the typhoon. Pictures included with this article provide a look at some of the damage suffered in the storm.

BKP’s donated books are typically geared towards students – elementary, middle and high school aged. However, Babcock reported there is particularly a need for books geared toward grades K through 3.  Picture books and easy chapter books are also very welcome because for most of the children, English is their second language, noted Babcock.

If you or your business, organization or school group is able to help out with kids’ books for libraries damaged in Typhoon Haiyan, email Judith Babcock at judibabcock@gmail.com.
