Iconic Hilltop Steak House to Close

The Route 1 landmark with the huge cactus outside and big portions inside plans to close on Oct. 20.

Hilltop Steak House, the iconic North Shore restaurant in Saugus known for its big portions and outsized cactus sign, will close this month.

The news, confirmed in a letter to the town of Saugus according to CBS Boston, marks an end to one of the region's best-recognized eateries. It has been in business for more than 50 years.

Management cited a "dramatic change in the volume of our business," according to the letter, parts of which were reprinted in this Globe report. The closing date is Oct. 20, according to Boston Restaurant Talk.

Hilltop's butcher shop in Weymouth will stay open, the Globe reports.

Will Route 1 ever be the same? Are you sad it's closing? When was the last time you went to Hilltop Steak House?
