Genetics Company Opens Facility in Wakefield

A company that performs advanced DNA research has opened a new office in Wakefield.

ZS Genetics held a ribbon cutting this week at its new 10,000 square foot location on Audubon Road. Representatives from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, as well as State Representative Paul Brodeur and company founder William Glover were among those in attendance.

“Having access to the talent and resources available in the Boston area was a critical factor in our decision to locate here,” said Glover in a statement. “We are moving into this facility with a dozen employees and will be looking to expand our workforce in the near future.”

Along with being the only business in Wakefield featuring a tank filled with genetically modified luminescent fish in its lobby, company representatives also report that ZS Genetics is home to one of the most powerful electron microscopes currently in use, with the ability to magnify 10 million times – powerful enough to look in between individual DNA rings. (Note: An attached courtesy graphic shows what gold atoms look like under the microscope.) The microscope is so sensitive that it's kept in a soundproof room - even a person's voice can affect the accuracy of a reading, a company representative explained.
