Then and Now: Sailing on Lake Quannapowitt

Each week, Wakefield Patch takes a look at the town's past using an object spotted for sale on eBay.

With another season of sailing and paddling on Lake Quannapowitt fading, it's worth noting just how long this local past time has been around, and how much it has figured into the fabric of Wakefield.

This postcard recently spotted for sale on eBay depicts pretty much the same activity one day back in 1910. Of course back then, they were still decades away from hearing the term "windsurfing" for the first time.

As mentioned in last week's column, this is also one of those old postcards that preserves some long ago bit of daily existence. Much of the writing on this postcard to Mrs. A.P. Dow of Haverhill is difficult to make out, but the senders seems to be mentioning a couple of acquaintances he plans to visit in the next several days, casually mentioning at the end of the postcard that "her house has been broken into." With love, G. and D." it concludes.
