Coach William Tighe Warrior Club Fund Now Permanent

The Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Coach William Tighe Warrior Club Fund has become permanent. The fund received generous support from the Wakefield Warrior Club, the reunion attendees of WHS Class of 1964, and many of Coach Tighe’s former players and friends in the community.

This fund was started at the request of Coach Tighe's first team at Wakefield, "The Fighting '57."  Members of the 1957 team organized a retirement party for Coach in July of 2011, and monies collected at this event were used to establish this fund.

Coach William Tighe coached the Wakefield High School Football team from 1957 through the 1963 season.  His teams won 42 games against only 16 losses with 4 ties.  Under his direction, the Warriors won Middlesex League Championships in 1957, 1958, 1961 and 1962.  During his tenure at Wakefield, Tighe coached 6 future Wakefield High School Hall of Fame Inductees.  Tighe himself was inducted into the Wakefield High School Hall of Fame in 1991.

Tighe left Wakefield in 1963 and went on to coach at Malden and Lexington.  He retired at the age of 86 in 2010 with a career record of 268 wins, 233 losses and 13 ties.  He retired as the oldest high school football coach in the country after 53 years as a head coach. He is also a member of the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Malden High School Hall of Fame and Lexington High School Hall of Fame.
