Clear fire hydrants and catch basins throughout the winter

Wakefield residents and business owners are reminded to clear snow and ice from fire hydrants and catch basins during the winter months. This will ensure everyone’s safety in the event of an emergency during the remaining eight (8) weeks of winter that are before us.

“Keeping catch basins clear of snow and ice will reduce the possibility of street flooding during heavy rains or snow melting periods,” Wakefield Department of Public Works Director Richard Stinson said. “This winter has been a good example of the conditions that could create flooding, especially if catch basins are blocked by snow.”

“We are asking everyone to check the areas near their home or business after every winter storm to make sure that snow is also cleared from hydrants. This will enable immediate access to the hydrants in the event of a fire,” the Director added.

The DPW also reminds residents to read the DPW’s Snowplowing and Snow Removal brochure that is available at the DPW office at the Town Hall and on the Town’s website. The brochure explains the department’s policies and procedures regarding snow plowing and removal from roadways, sidewalk plowing, the winter parking ban which started on December 1st, illegally parked vehicles and Town bylaws pertaining to the clearing of snow from the sidewalks in the downtown area, and depositing snow on public ways.
