I am currently running a 24 day challenge in my bootcamp to help my bootcampers jump start their goals, whether it be weight loss or living a healthy lifestyle. In this program, the participants modify their diet and eliminate things like sugar, alcohol and gluten, and are encouraged to exercise as well. The one thing that I find people get hung up on is the number on the scale. While this is one measure of progress, in my opinion it is not the most important measure.
We should be more aware of our body composition rather than our weight. The number on the scale is the total weight of all of our body's tissues. This may fluctuate during the day based on things like time of day and hydration. Body composition on the other hand measures the relative proportions of fat and lean body mass. If your body composition is within the satisfactory ranges, (10-22 percent for men and 20-32 percent for women) you have less risk of developing obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and even some cancers.
Changes in body composition take time and a dedicated effort, but the positive impact on health and quality of life is worth the effort. Participation in regular exercise and physical activity along with a healthy balanced diet are the key to reaching and maintaining a healthy body composition. It is possible for the number on the scale to remain constant but experience changes in fat mass and lean mass. So don't get too hung up on the numbers on the scale!!
