There was no telling how the season would end up when it began in August. Luckily for the Wakefield boys’ cross country team, their hard work ended up paying off when they went undefeated in the Freedom Division of the Middlesex League to capture the Freedom Division Championship. Then Aaron Lucci, Jared Geller, Mike Sheehan, and Chris McNall were selected as Freedom Division All Stars. They followed that up with a very strong third place showing at the Middlesex League Championship Meet. The meet showcased all Middlesex League teams from both the Liberty(large school) Division and Freedom(small school) Division. Wakefield put all five of its scorers in the top 30 to capture third behind the Massachusetts 4th ranked Lexington and Arlington, also a Liberty Division team. Wakefield was defeated handily by Arlington in the first crossover meet of the season, but if the scoring on Thursday was calculated without the other teams, Wakefield would have come out on top. Although this statistic does not get any true recognition, it does show how far this new group of boys has come.
Junior Captain Aaron Lucci led the way for the Warriors with a 6th place finish in a time of 12:53 on the 2..5 mile course at the Woburn Country Club. Sophomore Mike Sheehan improved by 2min 30 seconds from last year to medal with his 19th place finish in 13:33. Junior Chris McNall had a great race to secure his All Star selection with his 21st place finish in 13:38 in his first season. Senior Captain Jared Geller improved on his 29th place finish from last year to come in 23rd with a time of 13:39. Sophomore Jackson Gallagher, who was injured the first half of the season continues to close the gap on the others and placed 30th in a time of 13:55 in his first season. Junior Alex Mitchell also had a good day with his 53rd place finish in a time of 14:36 in his first season. Junior Timmy O’Connell placed 67th with a 1 min improvement from last year in 15:07.
The varsity team will now head to Wrentham on Saturday to attempt a return trip to All States.
The Warriors were well represented in the JV race as well.
